Currently watching the turkish tv show THE GIFT (ATIYE) on NETFLIX because it is on the "love list" of my Queen @chrystabell.bsky.social and enjoying it.
#TheGift
#Atiye

Finally time catching up with #Atiye season 2 ... less archaeology, but much more (sometimes bit too much) drama and (bit too bizarre) mystery™ (for my taste) - yet great to see Urfa again on the screen and kudos for the shoutout to #GöbekliTepe's excavator Klaus Schmidt.

Göbekli tepede mor taşlı bi mağara olduğuna ve oradan başka boyuta geçilebildiğine bile inanırım ama taksicinin bedava götüreceğine inanmam #atiye
Upon second thought, I really think #GöbekliTepe wasn‘t the best setting for the story told in "#Atiye".
With it’s historic frame & mysticism, the ruins of the celestial 'sanctuaries' at #EskiSogmatar (same region) could‘ve been a thibg. Maybe next season, @netflixturkiye? 😉
In the end an early Neolithic frame was simply not really fitting the story told in "#Atiye" (no spoilers 😉), and thus it wasn‘t pushed much further.
Still feel a bit sorry for #Urfa though - this absolutely *is* a picturesque setting deserving to be featured more prominently.
Got to admit though some disappointment in the script. After all the noise about #GöbekliTepe in the beginning, the site & its archaeology played a ... surprisingly unimportant role in "#Atiye".
If we‘re honest, omitting any reference to GT wouldn’t change anything of the plot.
Final thoughts after finishing @netflixturkiye's "#Atiye" (called "#TheGift" in its international version), a mystery drama about an Istanbul painter ... and some archaeological mystery in SE Anatolia.
Bit more drama than mystery for my taste, but entertaining without question.
And I‘m quite pleased the colleague in the "#Atiye" show is actually not only reading our articles ... but also puts print-outs up his living room walls. 👌😉
This here should be from @AktuelArkeoloji 46/2015, in case you would have a look...
Of course Erhan Bey‘s office decoration doesn‘t cease to amaze in this "#Atiye" episode either - this time we get a good look onto a drawing of Pillar 43. Which indeed is something...
So with episode 8 we end the show (for now) - and finally learn about #TheGift of "#Atiye".
We also, finally, return to Urfa and #GöbekliTepe in this episode. Well, sort of. For a short glimpse at least.
New year, new "#Atiye" (#TheGift) episode (the 7th).
In which a family drama unfolds, some mysteries are solved, but others aren‘t.
There‘s actually not much archaeology to comment in this episode - but we get to see a bit of #Istanbul.
Dan Brown sends greetings via cryptex.
And: More of our archive photos scattered in this "#Atiye" episode, too.
If you want to know why this #sculpture here‘s special and why we‘re finding so many similar sculpture’s #heads but not their torsos at #GöbekliTepe - we got you covered...
Meanwhile in "#Atiye" (#TheGift) episode 6 an archaeologist does what an archaeologist can best (spoiler: digging).
And ... plot twist: There‘s *another* mysterious journal showing up. 😲
So, in ep. 5 of "#Atiye" (#TheGift) we‘re pretty much fumbling around in the dark (figuratively and literally) without much happening - leaving aside the en passant discovery of a burial chamber archaeologists were trying to locate for ages (not relevant to the story though 🤷🏻♂️).
Also start suspecting "#Atiye ‘s" Erhan Bey’s carrying half our picture archives in his phone.
Got to admit, I‘m still not convinced of astronomical interpretation - sometimes in Neolithic iconography a snake really is a #snake, even beyond...
Now, episode 4 of "#Atiye" (#TheGift) is quite an emotional one. And one where we‘re going for a camping trip to ... wait, Nemrut Dag?
Complete with a beautiful sunrise over the burial mound, though. And isn‘t that what everybody‘s coming for anyway?
Hey, don't take my "#Atiye" / "#TheGift" tweets overly critical. I'm not here to debunk a TV show - we're all agreeing it's fiction, right?
I'm just having fun commenting a bit on the real #archaeology of #GöbekliTepe (which I happen to know a bit about), nothing more. 😉
Not complaining ... local versions seem pretty good, in particular the English one. But at least in the German version almost evey character in "#Atiye - #DieGabe" seems to think that archaeological site in the southeast is pronounced "Göbekli TP" for some reason, @NetflixDE. 🤔
Commuting between Istanbul and Urfa seems impressively easy in "#Atiye " by the way. Did no-one think of their CO2 footprints for a second?! 😲😉
Seems, "#Atiye"-archaeolgist Erhan is into archaeoastronomy now. Sorry, but I’m not convinced there‘s much evidence yet. 🤷🏻♂️
And ... isn‘t it a bit early to reconstruct complex geometrical patterns based on not yet completely excavated features, dear colleague? 🤔
Also introducing in this episode of "#Atiye": The famous Urfa rain - producing a nice mud track all over the site in no time. 😉
Alright, here we go: "#Atiye" (#TheGift) episode 3. Where we learn of the old Indiana-Jones dilemma of the mysterious journal’s (introduced in ep. 2) *missing pages* (essentially important) and more printouts for decoration (in an accurately stuffed excavation-office-container).
Oh, and this episode of "#Atiye" is also honorably mentioning: #cranes.
What‘s so exciting about cranes at #GobekliTepe? I‘m glad you asked! 😉

"#Atiye" lead archaeologist Erhan got an impressive Istanbul appartment by the way (quite the view, dear colleague) - and I totally dig the subtle decoration. 😉
