Rainbow Lorikeet 'Trichoglossus moluccanus' from the Adelaide parklands #Australia and one of the crowd favourites and one most observed bird in the #AussieBirdCount check it out in February
#BirdsSeenIn2026
I reckon the locals take the same approach to October's @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount - singing joyfully the week before, then strangely absent when I'm out counting. Best wishes for the British version.

In the #AussieBirdCount by @birdlifeoz.bsky.social each August, the rainbow #lorikeet was the most often counted species nationwide. They've spread with our homes & gardens (& were introduced from the east coast into Western Australia).
They're watching our plums ripen right now...
Importantly, this simplified bird community is typically made up of the same, repeated set of species including the Australian magpie, rainbow lorikeet, noisy miner and little raven – birds that often make the top 10 in BirdLife Australia's #AussieBirdCount. 2/5
A bird with a chest back, white belly and black-capped head. It has a yellow eye and black bill, and it looks slightly alarmed. It is standing amongst reeds and other pond vegetation.
Nankeen Night-Heron showed up on our dam last week, which was very nice of since I got to record it in my #AussieBirdCount surveys. Doesn’t like having its photo taken, but I finally got it! #ausbirds
I was sad because it was so wet I was going to miss doing the #AussieBirdCount. Then there was a break in the rain, so I did it from my Dad's large hospital window as he slept,

Lovely #birding thread💚
Thanks @rickicoughlan.bsky.social
Appropriate find considering it’s the wrap up of the #AussieBirdCount today. 🤠👍

Get out and count birds today! They’re trying to get to 5million, only 500,000 to go!! #aussiebirdcount
Today is the last day to submit #aussiebirdcount @birdlifeoz.bsky.social
Help our feathered friends. Count them! It only takes 30 minutes and from wherever you are.
Simple and fun. 🦜🦅🦢🕊️🦆
Bright green and red parrot on an outdoor table and amongst the succulents
Beautiful young King Parrot visiting this morning. Making sure he is counted… #aussiebirdcount
List of birds i saw this morning during the national bird count. 55 birds, 15 species in 20 minutes.
Last day of the #AussieBirdCount
In 4x20min sessions I spotted 245 #birds of 23 different species in 2 locations.
2 highlights were the 6 #ganggangs flying over the second i began the first day, and hearing 4 #koels this morning. Koel calls are the sound of summer.
Did a #bird survey yesterday - wildlife on or near a pond , was actually surprised at numbers we got! #AussieBirdCount
The coolest thing just happened!!
I was in the back yard when a black bird with the glossiest feathers, a blue-green-ivory bill and bright red eye landed on the bird bath not 3m away!
#EasternKoel or #Stormbird! Absolutely made my day.

Went to start my #aussiebirdcount this morning…
…first bird was a Wedge-Tailed Eagle. Didn’t see anything else after that, but heard plenty of alarm calls…
screenshot of my tally for today’s birdcount: 3 x house sparrow, 3 x silver gull, 3 x common blackbird time: 19:04, duration 20 minutes there is a blue header with illustrations of various birds
a not very exciting tally for today…I am in the city centre though
know the swallows were under the fire stairs but they didn’t dart about so not counted
who knows what tomorrow may bring #aussiebirdcount
Screen shot of my Aussie Bird Count app showing 3 counts submitted, 14 species seen and 70 individuals.
A cheeky New Holland honeyeater or Tjoodik in Noongar (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), peeking out from some soft green herbs. A striking bird, with a black and white striped breast, yellow wing flashes and white eye that is stark against mostly black cheeks. These birds have white facial tufts that become more obvious when excited or angry.
Yesterday I got to work early for a campus @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount in one of my favourite spots.
Turns out it was Red Wattlebird and New Holland Honeyeater central, with some kind of inter and intra-species conflict playing out for banksia access rights!

All the data collected this week will help provide a snapshot of how our birds are faring. Even if you don't have many birds in your local area, every bird count helps! Happy birding ☺️ 4/4

A photo of a group of people bird watching. The group is standing outdoors in an urban park with tall eucalyptus trees in the background. They are facing away from the camera and looking through binoculars and camera lens at a bird out of frame. It is early morning, and the sun is shining against their backs.
The @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount is here! It's time to get outdoors and count some birds! 🦜 🐦⬛ 🦆 🦉 🐦 🦢

Brightly coloured: blue wings, red chest and head, overall yellow green chest of the crimson rosella ( yellow variant)- which is an exceedingly stupid name.
Grey brown and cream intricately patterned bird in silhouette against pale sky. This is a red wattle bird ( with no obvious red wattles )
Bright blue, red yellow and green head of lorikeet peeping over the callistemon red bottle brush flowers
Pretty grey bird with spotted necklace perched on guttering is the Spotted dove and a bit of a pest.
#aussiebirdcount
A bit saddened to see my urban birds are mainly blackbirds, sparrow, spotted doves-basically introduced pests. Thank heavens for the lorikeets, wattle birds, silver eyes and weebills in the callistemon or just darting through.
My Aussie bird count tally.
It's Aussie bird count week. I just submitted a count - I think most of them were hiding though.

Friends from NZ visited a few weeks ago, & Ian's camera caught what I couldn't - the spotted #pardalote building a nest in the end assembly of our retractable clothesline. Sharing this even though the #birds eventually chose somewhere else nearby to nest. Seen around since; into #AussieBirdCount.
Example of the huge red boom of the weeping bottle brush. Looks exactly like the name says-in red
Bright yellow blue and green bird partially hidden by the foliage and blooms of the bottle brush.
Blue and orange head popping out above the leaves and flowers
A red wattle bird showing off a nice silhouette and detailed feather patterns perched high on the bottle brush.
Lorikeets loving the abundant bottle brush blooms, and a red wattle bird 🪶 #aussieBirdCount #birds
Nice pics! Picked up 2 threatened species in survey this morning at Swan Bay Lake Macquarie. Pied Oystercatcher and Osprey thru the scope do no pics #AussieBirdCount #BirdlifeOz
Photograph of a pair of White-bellied Sea Eagles landing on the upper branches of a dead tree, legs down and wings stretched. They have wide wings but short and stout bodies with broad but short tail feathers. They are coloured in mottled brown and white with dark flight "fingers".
Photograph of one of the immature White-bellied Sea Eagles flying past the author's hide, lit by the late afternoon sun against a blue sky. The bird is a striking blend of white and black with shades of brown, a heavy greyish beak, brown eyes, and strong yellowish feet. The brown colouration indicates its immaturity.
The Aussie Bird Count for 2025 is underway so I went to Pitt Town Nature Reserve yesterday where I was delighted to a pair of immature White-bellied Sea Eagles to my list!
You can go to aussiebirdcount.org.au to participate in the count

Top of my BirdLife Aus Bird Count app showing one completed checklist. Most common species for this 20min count was the rainbow lorikeets
A cheeky rainbow lorikeet hangs upside down in a red bottlebrush tree, beak buried in the fluffy red blossom. Its mostly green body is perfectly camouflaged in the green foliage, with on the blue head and yellow chest creating a bright flash of extra colour.
Day 1 of @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount was pretty soggy here on Whadjuk Noongar Country (Perth, Western Australia).
Luckily I got up early to get a courtyard count in with a cup of coffee!
The rainbow lorikeets* were up to their usual mischief in the red bottlebrush.

Just as I pressed submit after my count two Australian Magpies clashed viciously in the sky right above me, locking claws in the air for an instant before parting with angry cries . . . Tonight's winner was certainly the Rainbow Lorikeet!
