Aussie Bird Count Celebrate National Bird Week by taking part in the biggest citizen science project to hit Aussie shores. Join thousands of people from across the country, heading out into their backyards, local parks...

I reckon the locals take the same approach to October's @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount - singing joyfully the week before, then strangely absent when I'm out counting. Best wishes for the British version.

In the #AussieBirdCount by @birdlifeoz.bsky.social each August, the rainbow #lorikeet was the most often counted species nationwide. They've spread with our homes & gardens (& were introduced from the east coast into Western Australia).
They're watching our plums ripen right now...

Importantly, this simplified bird community is typically made up of the same, repeated set of species including the Australian magpie, rainbow lorikeet, noisy miner and little raven – birds that often make the top 10 in BirdLife Australia's #AussieBirdCount. 2/5

A bird with a chest back, white belly and black-capped head. It has a yellow eye and black bill, and it looks slightly alarmed. It is standing amongst reeds and other pond vegetation.

Nankeen Night-Heron showed up on our dam last week, which was very nice of since I got to record it in my #AussieBirdCount surveys. Doesn’t like having its photo taken, but I finally got it! #ausbirds

I was sad because it was so wet I was going to miss doing the #AussieBirdCount. Then there was a break in the rain, so I did it from my Dad's large hospital window as he slept,

Last day of the #AussieBirdCount
In 4x20min sessions I spotted 245 #birds of 23 different species in 2 locations.
2 highlights were the 6 #ganggangs flying over the second i began the first day, and hearing 4 #koels this morning. Koel calls are the sound of summer.

Eastern Koel - BirdLife Australia The male Eastern Koel has a glossy black plumage and red eye. In contrast, the female is brown-white-cream with many fine black bars and has a black crown.

The coolest thing just happened!!
I was in the back yard when a black bird with the glossiest feathers, a blue-green-ivory bill and bright red eye landed on the bird bath not 3m away!

#EasternKoel or #Stormbird! Absolutely made my day.

Went to start my #aussiebirdcount this morning…

…first bird was a Wedge-Tailed Eagle. Didn’t see anything else after that, but heard plenty of alarm calls…

a not very exciting tally for today…I am in the city centre though

know the swallows were under the fire stairs but they didn’t dart about so not counted

who knows what tomorrow may bring #aussiebirdcount

A cheeky New Holland honeyeater or Tjoodik in Noongar (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae), peeking out from some soft green herbs. A striking bird, with a black and white striped breast, yellow wing flashes and white eye that is stark against mostly black cheeks. These birds have white facial tufts that become more obvious when excited or angry.

Yesterday I got to work early for a campus @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount in one of my favourite spots.

Turns out it was Red Wattlebird and New Holland Honeyeater central, with some kind of inter and intra-species conflict playing out for banksia access rights!

All the data collected this week will help provide a snapshot of how our birds are faring. Even if you don't have many birds in your local area, every bird count helps! Happy birding ☺️ 4/4

A photo of a group of people bird watching. The group is standing outdoors in an urban park with tall eucalyptus trees in the background. They are facing away from the camera and looking through binoculars and camera lens at a bird out of frame. It is early morning, and the sun is shining against their backs.

Brightly coloured: blue wings, red chest and head, overall yellow green chest of the crimson rosella ( yellow variant)- which is an exceedingly stupid name.

A bit saddened to see my urban birds are mainly blackbirds, sparrow, spotted doves-basically introduced pests. Thank heavens for the lorikeets, wattle birds, silver eyes and weebills in the callistemon or just darting through.

Friends from NZ visited a few weeks ago, & Ian's camera caught what I couldn't - the spotted #pardalote building a nest in the end assembly of our retractable clothesline. Sharing this even though the #birds eventually chose somewhere else nearby to nest. Seen around since; into #AussieBirdCount.

Day 1 of @birdlifeoz.bsky.social #AussieBirdCount was pretty soggy here on Whadjuk Noongar Country (Perth, Western Australia).

Luckily I got up early to get a courtyard count in with a cup of coffee!

The rainbow lorikeets* were up to their usual mischief in the red bottlebrush.

Just as I pressed submit after my count two Australian Magpies clashed viciously in the sky right above me, locking claws in the air for an instant before parting with angry cries . . . Tonight's winner was certainly the Rainbow Lorikeet!
