The “not lily white” hand picked NSW Police Commissioner is now making laws (which is Parliament’s proper role) and will determine their application (which is the judiciary’s proper role)

Separation of powers???

Freedom of political communication???

Political cartoon featuring two lawyers reading a Law journal, the first lawyer says, “What should be done with the title of the Attorney General?” and the second lawyer responds, “Banishment to Nauru Springs to mind”. I can’t quite make out the signature because I don’t have my glasses on but I think the cartoonist is S. Roth.

Hang on a minute! Australia’s #AttorneyGeneral is not required to have legal qualifications! How the bloody hell does that work then?

“There’s no requirement in the #AustralianConstitution or #FederalLegislation for the AG to be a #lawyer.”

Back cover of the December 1909 issue of ‘Australia today’ journal. A welcome to immigrants advertisement from Commonwealth of Australia, department of external affairs, which was responsible for immigration. The welcome to immigrants includes a proviso that the welcome is only extended to people “of the white race”. This was part of the white Australia policy which was in effect until 1975 when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam got rid of it once and for all.

A page from the Australian Constitution, 1900 version, which features section 51, relating to powers of the parliament. I have highlighted section 51 (ix) which simply states “quarantine”. Matters relating to quarantine are the responsibility of Australia’s federal parliament. The original constitution is available on the ‘documenting a democracy’ website.

Will he go to jail? Can he still run for president? What Donald Trump's conviction means The former US president has been found guilty of all 34 charges he faced in a hush money trial.

The #AustralianConstitution got this kind of problem sorted.

“The #USConstitution only requires that presidents be at least 35 years old and US citizens who have lived in the country for 14 years. In theory, Trump could be sworn in from jail on Inauguration Day.”
