My Bonsai Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea glauca) has lovely new growth coming after the flower spike has now died off. A quick trim of the outer leaves and back into place. I'll remove the dead flower in a few weeks, when autumn has set in. #AustralianNativeBonsai
After taking it from the grow pot, I washed about 50% of the dirt from it's roots. Trimmed some & spread them out in the pot. For about a week I'd covered the roots with paper towel & kept it moist.
I brushed the roots clean of dirt down about 4cm to expose some larger roots. The aerial roots were wired about 8mths ago and they've created the conditions to form a 2nd trunk. The water was used to dig out the remaining soil & flatten it awaiting some pebbles in a day or two.
The plant has been a work in progress for over 14 months with the next phase being the trimming & shaping of branches. Pebbles to be added also.
The grow pot, the LHB had been in this for about 14 months & I'd started some shaping. I haven't been worried about leaf size but will from now on.
I decided to pot up my Lord Howe Banyan (Ficus macrophylla subsp columnaris). I'm hoping it's aerial roots will mimic it's island cousins & form a new trunk. It's been a pleasure watching the trunk thicken, the aerial roots form & the branches spread. (Read the ALT texts) #AustralianNativeBonsai
An update on my Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) Bonsai. Season's new growth is distinctly smaller than last years, so my take, it's starting to repond to the pot's confines. #AustralianNativeBonsai
I was asked if I'd photoshopped my Bonsai Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea Glauca) because it was a single photo, so here's a video. (And thankyou for thinking I had the computer skills to fake my proudest Bonsai moment). #AustralianNativeBonsai
Grass tree in flower
It's cousin Xanthorrhoea Australis which has never flowered.
I emailed the National Arboretum Canberra regarding my flowering Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea Glauca) & they've kindly replied to say they know of no other or heard of a Bonsai Grass Tree. #AustralianNativeBonsai

The Flower spike has taken about a week to get that tall.
This is possibly my proudest Bonsai moment, my Xanthorrhoea Glauca, Australia Grass Tree is flowering. It & another Xanthorrhoea were bought online as tubestock in 2020 (a pandemic experiment). They have sat patiently for 5yrs - until now. #AustralianNativeBonsai
The peg is bigger than the pot
The pot fits easily into the width of my 4 fingers
The fruit is smaller than a match head
The pot is less than 5cm wide at it's widest, 1cm deep
Here's my smallest Bonsai, a Ficus Obliqua - Small Leaf Fig, in fruit. It's pot is 5cm accross, 1 cm deep. The fruit is smaller than a match head. #AustralianNativeBonsai
This cutting was propagated in late 2024. I've cut the higher trunk & will propagate it also. I'll wire the new growth so it's new shoots will be horizontal in a hope they'll form aerial roots
My OG LH Banyan. Absolutely powering along & given it's getting a real thick trunk in just over a year, I'll keep cutting out new upper shoots for propagation.
Snipped my 1st Lord Howe Fig (Ficus macrophylla f. columnaris) cutting yesterday. The original shipped from Lord Howe (as a 2 leafed baby) is booming along. I'm training new trunks on it to be branches with the hope of stunning aerial roots. The snippet is being propagated. #AustralianNativeBonsai
The top of my Bunya Pine Bonsai & new shoots to form an upper trunk
Bunya Pine Bonsai
Bunya Pine Bonsai from a different angle
My Bunya Pine (Araucaria Bidwillii) is always desperate to shoot a new trunk. I've removed over 50 shoots in the past 2yrs. It's responded by starting to shoot from the 2nd upper branches now. Sadly I'll never see it fruit, as it's about 100yrs old before that will happen. #AustralianNativeBonsai
Lopped two main growth spots off both trunks.

New growth of two trunks from a trunk prune made in early autumn (5 months ago)
Gave my Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) a quick prune & it's starting to take a nice twin trunk shape & folding out. In the wild it is usually a single tall trunk conifer. My ultimate aim is to attempt a Sabamiki style. (Requiring Patience & a little Zen) #AustralianNativeBonsai
My miniature Ficus Obliqua (Small Leaf fig) is in fruit . The moss layer is now also 4 times as deep as the pot. #Bonsai #AustralianNativeBonsai
Bonsais set up for Sydney winter without 24/7 love & care.
With Winter here & our expectant departure on holiday soon, I've set up a daily sprinkler system (& heat pads for my precious Lord Howe Banyan stock) all with a minimum of daily oversight by the children, hopefully they'll survive. #AustralianNativeBonsai
6 Month update, You may remember I bought 4 sad tubestock plants Dec'24 as a folly. Angophora Floribunda (Rough Bark Apple Myrtle), Eucalyptus Robusta (Swamp Mahogany), Syncarpia Glomulifera (Turpentine) & Corymbia eximia (Yellow Bloodwood). All have survived #AustralianNativeBonsai
My Lord Howe Island Banyans (Ficus Macrophylla subsp Columnaris) are really starting to take shape. It's a very rare plant and even rarer Bonsai. In a year or two, I'll be happy to share some cuttings if anyone is interested. #AustralianNativeBonsai
Tiny Ficus Obliqua coming into fruit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficus_obliqua
The moss was originally about 3mil deep. Now it's 3cm +
My Small Leaf Fig (Ficus Obliqua) is fruiting again. The moss is also acting as a substrate with the roots growing upwards through old moss. As tempting as it is to trim the roots, I'm going to let it continue to see what happens but being top heavy, I'll build a pot cradle #AustralianNativeBonsai

Dying gum nuts
The last flowers
My Silver $ Tree or Argyle Apple (Eucalyptus Cinerea) is finished flowering. I'll leave the expired flower gum nuts to sit as a reminder of it's past glory. #AustralianNativeBonsai
Take a spin with my Small Leaf Fig (Ficus Obliqua) . I'm not sure how big to let it get, or if I have the skill to keep the shape if it continues to grow. The years will tell. #AustralianNativeBonsai
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grevillea_robusta
My Silky Oak (Grevillea Robusta) is looking great. It's nearly 7yrs old. I was staggered to see 1,000s of them growing in Kenya last year, where they are used as dwelling timbers & hill stabilisation. #AustralianNativeBonsai

Weeding my Tuckeroo (Cupaniopsis Anacardioides) of the amazingly numerous star shaped small weeds. The Tuckeroo is an ornamental shrub used as street trees in many parts of Sydney. This one is about 4yrs old is due for a hard prune in Spring. #AustralianNativeBonsai
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angophora_costata
Really pleased how well my Sydney Red Gum (Angophora costata) looks in it's new pot. I'll give it a decent prune in Spring to try to "bushy it up". #AustralianNativeBonsai
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_cinerea
From a pot smaller than most Mobile phones & just 6cm deep of soil, my Eucalypt Cinerea (Argyle Apple or Silver Dollar) Tree is now just about in full flower. #AustralianNativeBonsai
Proud moment. My Eucalypt Cinerama (Silver Dollar Gum) has actually flowered. #AustralianNativeBonsai
Angophora costata = Sydney Red Gum
I've been jazzing up my pots recently. This morning I've repotted my Sydney Red Gum (Angophora costata) into a slightly larger & rectangular pot. It's about 6yrs old now & has fabulous adult bark. π€ for flowering in the next few years. #AustralianNativeBonsai
Some friends are coming for lunch to hopefully enjoy my fusion Nippon offerings to which I try hard to stick with the 5 traditional preparations of: Raw, simmered, fried, steamed & roasted/grilled but the true hero of the table, 2 Bonsai small leaf figs (Ficus Obliqua) #AustralianNativeBonsai
My miniature Small Leaf Fig (Ficus Obliqua) is still holding on to it's fruit. #AustralianNativeBonsai
4 of 4 of the sad tubestock project plants. The Turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera) is the saddest of them all. It's at best alive. I'd love to be able to trim it once spring comes but it's not likely on present looks. Fingers crossed. #AustralianNativeBonsai
3 of 4 of the sad tubestock project plants, Yellow Bloodwood (Corymbia eximia) is also powering along. I'd think all these Tubestock were 3-5yrs old given this lignotuber on this one nearly filled the tube. I'll trim it once spring comes. #AustralianNativeBonsai
2 of 4 of the sad tubestock project plants, Rough Bark Apple (Eucalyptus Floribunda) is also powering along. You may remember because of a large tap root, I layed it on it's side in the Bonsai pot. Again, I'll trim it once spring comes. #AustralianNativeBonsai
1 of 4 of the sad tubestock project plants, Swamp Mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta) is powering along. 6 potential trunks. I'll trim it once spring comes. #AustralianNativeBonsai
Banksia ericifolia, the 2nd flower this season was a surprise
Banksia ericifolia , 1st flower this season
My Heath Banksia Bonsai (Banksia ericifolia) has surprised by having a 2nd flower this year. It's quite a few weeks behind the first flower. #AustralianNativeBonsai
