A Song on the Radio Elliot parked close to the beach and grabbed a brown-bagged bottle of tequila. Tie a Yellow Ribbon was on the radio, and he turned it up loud.

This weekend is the April 2026 #FuriousFiction writing challenge run by the #AustralianWritersCentre. It will be my sixth April challenge since my first in 2020, when I wrote A Song on the Radio. ๐Ÿ“ป #writers #writing #writingcommunity #writesky #shortstory www.tallandtrue.com.au/fiction/shor...

Acceptance from Furious Fiction Competition admin, reads:

THANK YOU.
YOUR STORY HAS BEEN RECEIVED
For the first time in Furious Fiction history, we're pulling back the curtain to let you know how we vote for our favourite stories each month. First, all stories are printed onto individual silk scarves and then fed through a pasta maker and an old-timey washing machine to test for freshness and taste. After this, the scarves that remain are given to seven angry monkeys, who strike them repeatedly with a gold sledgehammer. The scarves that survive form our long list, and then we throw them off an 11-storey building, and the ones that land in a painted circle on the ground are showcased. Finally, one is voted top pick by a focus group of 12 preschool children and one goat. Simple!

Mayโ€™s #FuriousFiction is done!! ๐ŸŽ‰

And miraculously stretched my story to 500 words(ish)

Or repeated the same few dozen words several times - time will tell ๐Ÿคฃ

Having voted early and escaped north for a few days, I'm using my break to circle the #awc prompts (and without getting angry) strike silky words into smooth yet furious fiction--I hope!๐Ÿฅด Good luck, everyone!

The Performance Three minutes into the performance, I stifled a yawn. The acclaimed actor and playwright Barry Lazarus fixed a beady eye on me from centre stage.

Looking forward to the brief arriving from the #AustralianWritersCentre later today for this weekend's #FuriousFiction. I wrote my first February story for the #flashfiction challenge in 2021, fittingly titled The Performance! ๐ŸŽญ www.tallandtrue.com.au/fiction/shor... #tallandtrue #shortstories

Just completed the travel writers course with the Australian Writers Centre and I've been very impressed by the course content and value. I'm hoping to now put all this new learning into practice and get some travel features published!

The People Were Happy A long time ago, poverty, floods, droughts, famines and war blighted a pale-blue planet. But the people endured the hardships and were happy.

#FuriousFiction switched from monthly to quarterly in 2022. I wrote The People Were Happy in January 2022 to get my monthly #shortstory "fix", using a brief from the #AustralianWritersCentre archive. โœ๏ธ #writers #writing

Thanks, #AustralianWritersCentre, for the prompts to write and submit my first #FuriousFiction #horrorstory. And for the opportunity to finally use a word I learned 40 years ago reading The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson, "preternatural"! ๐Ÿ™
