Author–Date Citation System
Use the author–date citation system to cite references in text in APA Style. In this system, each work used in a paper has two parts: an in-text citation and a corresponding reference list entry.
A figure shows an example reference list entry with the element highlighted in colors to represent how they correspond with the elements of the citations. The reference is as follows: Alexander, P. A. (2018). Past as prologue: Educational psychology's legacy and progeny. Journal of Educational Psychology, 110(2), 147-162. https://doi.org/10.1037/edu0000200
In this image, the author element (Alexander, P. A.) is highlighted in purple, and the date element (2018) is highlighted in blue.
In the two citation examples, these elements are highlighted in those same colors to show the correspondence. The parenthetical citation includes the surname from the author element of the reference and the year from the date element. Both are within parentheses, separated by a comma: (Alexander, 2018).
The narrative citation includes the surname and the year, but only the year is within parentheses: Alexander (2018).
