Question: "What advice would you give to aspiring writers hoping to be published for the first time?" Answer: "First, to never use the word aspiring. If you write, you are a writer. It is not up to any agent, editor, or publisher to tell you who you are. Case in point . . . my first novel, The Perks of [being a] Wallflower. After I finished the manuscript, I could not find an agent for over a year. Then, I got lucky, and the right people read it (thank you, Chris and Heather McQuarrie!), and they sent it to three more of the right people (thank you, Greer Hendricks, Eduardo Braniff, and Jack Horner!). Suddenly, I had a deal. Same book. Two different times. So, I do not believe in aspiring. I believe that if you are writing, you are a writer. And if you keep writing, you will get better."
