It has a broad distribution, inhabiting shallow wetlands like marshes, lagoons, and salt pans across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Stilts are often seen wading in shallow water, probing for aquatic invertebrates. They are social birds, sometimes forming small groups, and are known to be very protective of their nests and young, actively mobbing potential predators.
