🌍🌏 Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus)
The black-winged stilt, or common stilt, is a graceful wading bird with strikingly long pink legs, a slender black bill, and variable black and white plumage. It has a broad distribution, inhabiting shallow wetlands like marshes, lagoons, and salt pans across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Stilts are often seen wading in shallow water, probing for aquatic invertebrates. They are social birds, sometimes forming small groups, and are known to be very protective of their nests and young, actively mobbing potential predators. Some populations are migratory, moving to coastal areas in winter, while others are resident in warmer regions.
