B2Gold attempts to make Otjikoto green again Chamwe Kaira  B2Gold has rehabilitated 19% of the disturbed footprint at its Otjikoto Mine, covering 165 hectares. The company shared the update at the recent Mining Expo and Conference in Windhoek.  It has planted 10 100 seedlings from 18 indigenous species and restored about 20 hectares with grass species and soil-enhancing material. B2Gold said its non-obligatory rehabilitation fund ensures that rehabilitation obligations will be met by the end of the mine’s life. The mine has also reduced Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) consumption by more than three million litres a year.  From 2014 to 2018, the Otjikoto Power Plant ran entirely on HFO generators, consuming between 20 and 24 million litres annually.  This dropped after the addition of a 7 MW solar plant between 2018 and 2022, which supplied about 13% of power needs. Since 2022, the mine has been connected to the NamPower grid. Earlier this year, B2Gold signed an eight-year power purchase agreement for an additional solar plant to be built 20 km from the mine. The facility will supply about 25% of the mine’s total power needs, increasing solar energy use at Otjikoto to between 35% and 40% of demand. The N$200 million investment can be extended beyond the initial term. In 2024, the government received 57% of B2Gold Namibia’s profit before tax through direct taxes. Local procurement accounted for 57% of the mine’s total purchases. B2Gold is planning for life after mining, with ventures in tourism, agriculture, and energy trading. The Otjikoto Mine, Namibia’s largest gold mine, is located between Otavi and Otjiwarongo. It began commercial production in March 2015 after its first gold pour in December 2014. On 20 June 2024, B2Gold announced an initial inferred mineral resource estimate for the Springbok Zone, part of the Antelope deposit, located 3 km south of the Otjikoto Phase 5 open pit. In 2024, Otjikoto produced 198 142 ounces of gold, in line with its guidance of 185 000 to 205 000 ounces. Gold sales reached 203 796 ounces. Higher gold prices, peaking at US$2 911 per ounce, pushed revenue to N$8.9 billion, up from N$7.7 billion in 2023.

AR questions B2Gold’s Otavi youth scheme The Affirmative Repositioning (AR) has criticised mining company B2Gold over its handling of the ‘Be Your Own Boss’ initiative at Otavi. The initiative, aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs at the town, was launched a few weeks ago with funding from B2Gold. The AR claims the project was compromised by financial mismanagement and a lack of transparency. In a statement issued by AR’s Otjozondjupa regional chairperson and activist Jay Jay on Friday, the movement demanded an urgent meeting to renegotiate funding in favour of the Otavi community. This is after B2Gold released a statement defending the programme. “We find the statement severely lacking in transparency and accountability. It appears primarily aimed at protecting certain individuals – specifically employees and appointed trainers – who have misappropriated funds at the expense of the community and aspiring entrepreneurs,” the AR’s statement reads. Among the concerns raised are unexplained increases in equipment funding per trainee, from an initial N$3 000 to N$5 500. “With only N$110 000 allocated for equipment and just N$125 000 remaining in the account, the revised N$5 500 per trainee appears driven by leftover funds rather than a planned distribution,” Jay Jay said. The movement also questioned the logic behind the operational costs totaling N$282 600, calling them disproportionate given the limited travel and the fact that only two coaches were involved. Further, the trainer fees of N$797 400 were labeled “alarmingly high,” with the AR arguing that the vast majority of the N$1.19 million budget was spent on facilitators rather than on the trainees themselves. Further, AR claims the appointment of Catherine Kambanda as trainer was influenced by personal relationships within the company. “It is disappointing and disheartening that a program intended to empower local entrepreneurs instead prioritised the financial interests of trainers and insiders,” Jay Jay said. Through a statement issued by their corporate communications manager, Namasiku Nalisa, B2Gold has maintained that they are committed to transparency, and will engage with the Otavi Town Council to clear up any issues. Youth seek answers on B2Gold Funds Allexer Namundjembo Concerns have emerged over how the “Be Your Own Boss” youth empowerment programme in Otavi is being managed. Sponsored by B2Gold Namibia with N$1.19 million, the program aims to equip 20 young people with business skills and start-up capital. Johannes Johannes, a local activist, has questioned the transparency of the project.  He raised issues about the funds allocated to participants and the quality of the training. He said trainees were told they would receive equipment worth N$3 000 each after completing the program, which he believes is too low compared to the overall budget. “Twenty times N$3,000 amounts to just N$60,000. Where did the remaining funds go?” Johannes asked. Johannes also demanded a comprehensive analysis of the expenditure, highlighting issues related to training attendance and the facilitators’ role. Royalty Empire Investments CC, the company in charge of the program’s operations, responded to the concerns.  A spokesperson said they handled all logistics, including hiring training providers.  “Royalty Empire Investments CC managed all operational aspects, including selecting and engaging training providers to deliver the program as proposed,” the spokesperson said. They explained that the budget was agreed upon with B2Gold Namibia. “Training represents the most significant portion of the costs. Of the total budget, N$110 000 is set aside as start-up capital for the 20 trainees, equivalent to N$5 500 each. This amount will be disbursed at the conclusion of the program, no later than 15 July 2025,” he said. Royalty Empire Investments said the program was nearing completion.  “Although the program is nearing completion and final funding disbursements are pending, trainees have reported positive personal and professional growth. We believe the initiative will bring tangible benefits to the youth and wider community, including new business launches and employment opportunities,” the spokesperson said. He added that attendance records show participants have mostly been present, with only occasional absences due to personal matters. Still, Johannes insists that more openness is needed.  “The youth expected more substantial support and clearer guidance. Many feel the program has fallen short of its promises,” he said. In response to the queries sent to him, Otavi Mayor Isack Hoeb clarified the selection process for the local entrepreneurship training initiative, emphasising that it followed a structured and transparent procedure. “An open advert was issued according to clear specifications, and we received 279 applications,” he said. “From there, a shortlist of 30 was made based on criteria outlined in the application form, and further elimination was conducted based on how applicants answered key questions.” Hoeb explained that shortlisted candidates were then interviewed, and selections were made based on interview performance. “It was a fair process, just like any formal interview,” he added. He also added that 15 top candidates were selected, with two of them sponsored by Ohorongo Cement and four by Royalty Empire Investments, although two of the latter dropped out. The interview panel, he noted, included representatives from B2Gold, the Otavi Town Council, Royalty Empire, and a community member, with an observer present to ensure transparency. B2Gold Namibia responded to the concerns through its corporate communications manager, Namasiku Nalisa, stating the company will engage with all parties involved.  “We remain committed to transparency and will work with the Otavi Town Council and implementing partners to clarify any issues and support the youth involved,” she said. The program started in mid-2024 and is set to run for 12 months, offering business training and startup funding for the youth involved.

Govt gets 61% of Otjikoto’s profit as closure looms B2gold Namibia paid 61% of its N$4.1 billion pre-tax profit to the government in 2024 as the Otjikoto gold mine approaches closure. The company achieved record revenue of N$8.8 billion from its Otjikoto mine last year, and paid N$2.5 billion to the government as corporate tax, royalties, export levies and non-resident shareholder tax of 5%. This was said by B2Gold Namibia country manager and director John Roos in Windhoek on Monday. He highlighted the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives as the mine heads towards closure. “We all know a mine starts and closes at some time, but B2Gold wants to leave Namibia, the Otjozondjupa region, and the mine site in a better state than we found it,” he said. Roos said the Otjikoto mine produced 198 000 ounces of gold last year, contributing to the Canadian company’s total annual consolidated global production of 804 778 ounces. “We look forward to producing 175 000 ounces in 2025. This means a significant contribution to government, as well as our corporate social responsibility initiatives,” Roos said. He said the mine made a N$4.1 billion profit before tax in 2024 and 57% went to the government. “That does not include our corporate social responsibility initiatives or indirect taxes, and when we add these, we get 61% of profit before tax going to the government,” he said, dismissing the notion that mining companies do not pay taxes. Roos said over the past 10 years B2Gold moved from 100% dependency on environmentally unfriendly and costly diesel fuel to generate electricity to inaugurating the first solar plant in 2018, which provided 13% of the required energy. “In September 2022 we connected to the NamPower grid and weaned off fossil fuel. That was a N$200-million investment, which reduced our low-grade processing costs significantly,” he added. The mine also negotiated with Sustainable Power Solutions for another 10 megawatt, N$200-million solar plant. “In six years, Otjikoto mine helped leverage a N$400-million investment onto Otjozondjupa. These assets will continue benefiting Namibia beyond the mine’s closure, pumping green energy back into the grid,” Roos said. He said B2Gold has also spent US$16.6 million (N$320 million) on education, health, environment and livelihood up to the end of 2024. “We invested in long-term sustainable projects like the Ombili Clinic and Ombili Primary School at Otjiwarongo to accommodate 1 500 pupils when completed, and also invested in Otavi water reticulation projects,” he said. Roos said some assets – 18 000ha on which the mine sits, the solar plant, and a nature reserve with a variety of animals and plant species – will be turned into businesses that will continue funding social responsibility initiatives. “Last year, we were the largest private producer of maize, with 1 000 tonnes delivered to Namib Mills, and we expect 1 500 tonnes in 2025,” he said. This is in line with president Netumbo Nando-Ndaitwah’s call for increased food production, sustainable energy production, and employment creation, Roos said. Eric Barnard, the mine’s general manager, said after downsizing, Otjikoto Mine will have 400 workers for the underground and low-grade stockpile operations. The mine currently has about 700 employees. “Up to the end of 2024, we had made 179 positions redundant by putting a freeze, and to date another 138 people have been retrenched.” – email: matthew@namibian.com.na The post Govt gets 61% of Otjikoto’s profit as closure looms appeared first on The Namibian.
