Did you know that one of the most important early African-Canadian lawyers had a strong connection with Kingston? Robert Sutherland was born in Jamaica in the 1830s (early records, including of his date of birth and parentage, are unclear). He enrolled at Queen’s University in Kingston a mere eight years after it was founded and became not only the first known student and graduate of colour at Queen’s, but in all of British North America. His time as Queen’s was very successful and he won multiple awards and participated in several clubs on Campus.

Cameron Davis is a student and activist from Ontario. In 2020, he spoke at a Black Lives Matter protest, addressing the stresses he faces just trying to be a kid, and the speech later went viral. Shortly after, he co-founded BYR Youth, an organization that advocates for Black youth in the region of York, Canada, and also promotes allyship and community leadership. He has shared his message locally and globally through speaking engagements with students, police and governments. He is also a youth leader for the Children’s General Assembly, which presents an annual manifesto to the United Nations General Assembly. Davis is currently studying for a political science degree at the University of Ottawa, while also designing his clothing brand, 721 Merch, which raises money for disenfranchised youth. He is the recipient of several scholarships, including the Iris Malcolm Memorial Award, the JCA Dudley Laws Memorial Scholarship and the Alliance of Educators for Black Students Lesmond Scholarship.

WHO IS FERGIE JENKINS? Ferguson Jenkins Jr. is a hometown hero and a true baseball legend. One of the game's best pitchers of all time, Fergie was the first Canadian inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. And his story starts in Chatham-Kent. Fergie Jenkins grew up in Chatham, where he excelled in baseball, basketball, and hockey. In his first MLB season as a full-time starter with the Cubs, he recorded 20 wins and was selected to play in the 1967 All-Star Game. Jenkins played the majority of his career for the Cubs. He was a National League (NL) and Cubs All-Star for three seasons, and in 1971, he was the first Canadian and Cubs pitcher to win a Cy Young Award. He was a 20-game winner for seven seasons, including six consecutive seasons for the Cubs. He was the NL leader in wins, in 1971, and the American League (AL) leader in wins, in 1974. Jenkins was also the NL leader in complete games in 1967, 1970, and 1971, and the AL leader in complete games in 1974. He led the NL in strikeouts in 1969 and had over 3,000 strikeouts during his career.
