I’ve never particularly liked the term “blog.” Being old enough to remember when it first emerged as an abbreviation for “web log” (essentially, an online diary), I associate it with amateurism, with triviality, with a subtle desperation and loneliness. As an online writer and former journalist, I’ve always much preferred the thought of writing “articles” and “essays” — not mere “posts.” HOO, brother 🙄 here we go…

Frankly, I don’t even much care for the presence of “I” within my writing (or that of others), for who cares about little old me (or they)? Too much “I” carries with it an unpleasant hint of the Instagram selfie or meal portrait, if slightly more literary. Key in on this: “Surely, my writing’s not fundamentally about me.” A. Don’t call me Shirley, and B. The FUCK are you talking about Colby, if that is your real name (it doesn’t sound like a real name, it sounds like a cheese)?!

It’s all pretentious and bad. If you’re blind, don’t worry, I’m saving you trouble here. There’s nothing worthwhile in it.

Blech. I left him several teasing comments and added his story publicly to the List I just created called “Insufferable Pricks” with the description, “you know what you did.”
