You can only guess at what the votives and petitions are about both on the hawthorn tree and in the holloway on the way down. Little objects, painted shells, stones, mini-houses, a shopping bag saying "Good things will come"... Too personal to be photographed.

Looking towards the circle, its central mound, then the hawthorn with her votives and petitions. And the northern external marker stone.

#Ballynoe Stone Circle is a megalithic site, which may date back as far as 3000 BCE. Burl describes Ballynoe as one of the great rings of Western Europe. More of this background in ALT in the first image - Source: www.megalithicireland.com/Ballynoe.html

#Ballynoe Stone Circle. Some of the huge rocks along the perimeter

Picture 1 could be seen as a bullaun stone and there is a belief that the rainwater collecting in a stone's hollow has healing properties. Guess which one lots of people sit on.

Ballynoe railway station was on the Downpatrick, Killough and Ardglass Railway, which ran from Downpatrick to Ardglass. The station building, signal box, and goods shed remain standing and have been converted to private ownership.

In this picture the inner mound is visible. The circle is over 33m in diameter and some of the stones are almost 2m high.
