After a busy weekend presenting my Battle of Great Bridge #wargame at the 250th re-enactment I revisited my thoughts about good beginner games for those seeking to explore the confluence of history, games, and learning...battlegames.

Photo of the Battle of Great Bridge terrain board set up at the 250th commemoration of the battle. Alas, I have no action shots of me running games, as I was extremely busy the whole time and entirely on my own. Picture of a terrain diorama with stands of small paper miniature soldiers marching across it. String marks off square spaces. Boxes with dice and a few signs sit at both ends of the table.

The paper British forces march over the model bridge and across the island, hoping to dislodge paltry rebel militia. String divides the board into square spaces for the game.

Set up my Battle of Great Bridge wargame demo at the 250th commemoration event hosted by the City of Chesapeake, VA, Dec. 6-7. Ran many games, met some wonderful people, used the board to outline the battle, and discussed exploring history through games.

View out a front porch along a snow-covered walk, with snowy pines on the left and snow-covered tress on the right, and a snow-covered gravel driveway in the distance: probably about an inch of dusty light snow overall.

Ranks of 15mm scale paper miniatures by Peter Dennis mounted on magnetic bases in a plastic scrapbooking box (with metal strapping glued in to hold the magnetic bases), including three columns of British Redcoats/Grenadiers, some artillery, and a mass of Culpeper Minutemen.

Papercraft 15mm #miniature #wargaming soldiers ready to march off to the 250th Battle of Great Bridge event tomorrow...but snow will delay our departure by a few hours when the roads will hopefully clear up.

Shot of a folding table with a miniature wargaming diorama set up. Sting along brads in the wooden frame create a grid of squares for playing a game. Stands of paper soldiers occupy key locations, crossing a bridge and assembled behind barricades. Table draped with blue cloth, with two folding stands with signs about the battle and game.

Braving the snow tomorrow to travel to attend the 250th commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge Dec. 6-7 in Chesapeake, VA, where I’ll run history wargame demonstrations all weekend. If you’re in the area please stop by, say hello, and join a quick game.
