With the Japanese attack on Hong Kong, C Force was the first Canadian unit to see action in #WWII. They would also be the last to return home. There were 290 KIA; another 267 died in captivity. The HK PoWs were liberated on 30 August 1945.

He was killed during the Battle for Hong Kong when picking up a Japanese grenade thrown toward the Canadians. Gander was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal in 2000.
#OTD in 1941, 1,975 men of C Force & their mascot left Vancouver on the HMT Awatea & HMCS Prince Robert to bolster Hong Kong's defense to deter the Japanese. The Canadian contingent arrived on 16 Nov., only 23 days before the Japanese attack.

On June 12, 2025, Canadian senators paid tribute to veterans of the 1941 Battle of Hong Kong ahead of the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (V-J) Day. In a Senate statement, Senator Jane MacAdam honoured the nearly 2,000 Canadians sent to defend Hong Kong during WWII. Her father, George Palmer, was one of them. Captured during the battle, he endured more than three and a half years as a prisoner of war. She emphasized that the suffering extended beyond the battlefield and that families also carried deep burdens long after the war ended. Senator Yuen Pau Woo reminded Canadians that WWII was a global struggle—not only in Europe, but also in Asia. He framed the Battle of Hong Kong as part of a broader fight against fascism, imperialism, and colonialism, with Canadian soldiers contributing to that effort in the Indo-Pacific. Senator Rebecca Patterson underscored the importance of remembering those who served in lesser-known theatres of war. With no surviving veterans of the battle left, she highlighted how organizations like the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association (HKVCA) ensure their stories live on. Founded by the children of veterans, the HKVCA supports historical preservation, education, and family outreach. From August 14–17, 2025, the HKVCA will host commemorative events in Ottawa at the National War Memorial, the Hong Kong Veterans Memorial Wall, and the Canadian War Museum. Senators encourage all Canadians to attend and reflect on the sacrifice of those who fought in Hong Kong and their families who bore the legacy of war.
