Artist: Komal Aleem Title: Calling Home This piece represents my personal experience of feeling disconnected from my heritage. Many reasons for this include: being a second-generation immigrant, living in the UK, and being away from distant family due to diaspora. I sometimes feel like I do not get to connect with my culture in the same way others do. I used a telephone booth to show 'me' calling home. Alongside this, the traditional rug being ripped and fading away is a metaphor for my culture being slowly ripped away. It's my personal cultural experiences, that I am sure others can relate to, that make me human.

ARTIST: DEVIKA BAHADUR TITLE : HOME ON WHEELS This project draws on the metaphor of the *portable home where migrants often recrente a sense ot home not through permanence, but through portable objects, aesthetics and gestures. that remind them of their roots. The wheels urn this house into a moving vessle capable a carrying life, culture and memory acrose time and place.

Being Human Festival 2025 is now in full swing across the UK. So far we have seen a wide variety of activities and events including cooking workshops, walking tours, cabaret performance, and lots more! The UK’s national festival of the humanities runs until 15 November 2025.

Today EDICa is holding its first workshop with the #BeingHuman2025 festival. We’ve partnered with the Community Wellbeing Collective in Wester Hailes, a part of Edinburgh with multiple deprivation, just 7 min drive from Heriot-Watt University.
