Artist: Komal Aleem
Title: Calling Home
This piece represents my personal experience of feeling disconnected from my heritage. Many reasons for this include: being a second-generation immigrant, living in the UK, and being away from distant family due to diaspora. I sometimes feel like I do not get to connect with my culture in the same way others do. I used a telephone booth to show 'me' calling home. Alongside this, the traditional rug being ripped and fading away is a metaphor for my culture being slowly ripped away. It's my personal cultural experiences, that I am sure others can relate to, that make me human.

While I was there I spoke with the academics, who like me shared tangled genetic ancestry and current families. A richly diverse conversation #DMUHub #BeingHuman2025

Passing through the Highcross Cathedral of Consumerism, I came across #DMUHUB #BeingHuman2025, art works celebrating our diverse city, these made by ALevel art students. The Home on Wheels spoke to my peripatetic childhood. #RefugeesWelcome
