1 - MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks
There’s nothing groundbreaking about this LP.
On surface level, it’s a pretty straightforward alt-country record.
But everything MJL touches turns to gold - and this is no different.
An exceptional songwriter.

Sturgill Simpson - the most interesting country artist of the last decade - is no more.
Good job his alter-ego is up to the task of delivering some of the most beautiful songs of his career. A masterpiece.

3 - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God
I respected Cave’s last few albums but, honestly, I could never quite get past the - understandably - relentless sadness.
His latest with the Bad Seeds is joyous. I’m so glad it sounds like he has found some peace.

4 - Charli XCX - Brat
An album so good that it captured the zeitgeist in a way that no record in recent memory has managed to.
That was no fluke - it’s packed with countless tunes, clever lyrics & immaculate production.
The remix album was great, too.

5 - Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us
I’ll admit that I take VW for granted: they release albums so sporadically, I forget how consistently great they are.
The production & mixing on their latest makes it, imo, the best *sounding* album of the year.

6 - Kendrick Lamar - GNX
TBAP is a top 10 of all time record. Liked, didn’t love Damn. Really respected Mr Morale but seldom feel compelled to revisit it.
GNX is arguable Kendrick’s most fun album.
Never thought I’d say this but: thanks Drake.

8 - St Vincent - All Born Screaming
After hearing the album’s preceding singles, this was my most anticipated LP of the year.
It didn’t disappoint.
Excellent production, incredible guitar work, & nice to hear Dave Grohl where he belongs - behind the kit.

I’ve loved JW’s venture into more experimental, studio-based production over his last few records - although I know not everyone has.
But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find his return to his older, bluesier style exciting.

10 - Waxahatchee - Tigers Blood
I discovered, to my shame, Katie Crutchfield’s moniker, late - with the release of the incredible Saint Cloud in ‘20. Her run of 3 albums since, including her collab album Plains & this year’s LP, is one for the ages.

AL’s band, Big Thief, are one of the most consistently brilliant of the 21st Century. That she is equally prolific in releasing incredible solo work elevates her to one of the great modern songwriters.

12 - Fontaines D.C. - Romance
4 albums in and Fontaines’ brilliantly eclectic latest record cements their status as one of the best guitar band in the UK.
Starburster arguably song of the year, too - just for using a gasp as the main hook.

This took a few listens to grab me - but it when it did, I fell in love. One of the most interesting, original, exciting British guitar bands in yonks and deserved winner of the Mercury Prize.

5. Mt Misery, Love In Mind
A band that sound like Gerry Love’s TFC was always going to appeal but I wasn’t expecting to fall this hard! Songs with depth that get better and better and swept along with an infectious joie de vivre. Love it.

Their most musically accomplished album yet moved them towards a more baroque sound. Except tcnc which, despite its gloriously visceral synth section towards the end, is a misfit.
