Niab staff took part in the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust #BigFarmlandBirdCount this lunchtime on our trial grounds between Cambridge and Histon. We saw 12 species in total, the highlights being plenty of singing skylarks enjoying the spring sunshine and four stonechats.
Took part in the @gamewildlifeconservationtrust Big Farmland Bird Count as part of our work duties this morning. Wow, what a morning for it after all this terrible weather!

The @gwct.org.uk does release data on bird counts through its #BigFarmlandBirdCount (BFBC) initiative.
This annual survey provides a snapshot of bird populations on British farmland. The results are released annually since it started.
The Moorland Association also releases data on counts.
Just entered the results for our @gwct.org.uk 2025 #BigFarmlandBirdCount.
After 12 years counting we have lots of data from our farm. Not always sure what to make of it, but good fun.
In position for my #BigFarmlandBirdCount. Lots of Chaffinch, plenty of Yellowhammer and a single Brambling were the best of the bunch. Linnets didn't really show up and a Barn Owl seen before my count started. Nice way to start a day! @gwct.org.uk

Surveyed two Essex farms yesterday as part of the @gwct.org.uk Big Farmland Bird Count. Despite the gloomy weather we found YELLOWHAMMERS, BULLFINCHES, LINNETS, CHAFFINCHES, GOLDFINCHES and lots more. #BigFarmlandBirdCount #GWCT
It's the first day of the @gwct.org.uk's #BigFarmlandBirdCount!
We kicked off with a farm walk this morning, spotting large flocks of finches on AB9 plots and winter cover crops that have seeded. Despite the Baltic conditions, everyone had a good time and enjoyed their well-deserved bacon bap.
The @gwct.org.uk #BigFarmlandBirdCount starts today! #BFBC
Spend 30 mins recording any #FarmlandBirds you see on your farm! Are you taking part?
A great initiative to monitor the effect of conservation schemes by landowners on farmland birds
