We saw winged fruits in an earlier post; here are winged seeds. The capsules of Tabebuia aurea open to release dozens of seeds, each with a papery marginal wing that increases drag to slow the seed’s descent through the air column. #Bignoniaceae #dispersal #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Its name commemorates Abbe Jean Paul Bignon (1662-1743), the librarian to Louis XIV of France. Many are important timber trees and ornamentals, including Tabebuia (West Indian boxwood), Catalpa, Kigelia (sausage tree).
