Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are a prominent feature of Toronto's urban environment, active across all 25 wards year-round. This dataset provides on quarter of painstakingly collected data on raccoon activity, observed at the ward level and summarized in hourly intervals.

Average unit weight is currently trending upward. We are monitoring this.

Columns:

datetime + date + hour — hourly records, Jan–Mar 2024, all 25 wards
units_observed — number of raccoons spotted
bins_compromised — green bins successfully opened
raccoonconfidencelevel — 1–10 behavioural scale
averageunitweight_kg — trending up, as noted
incidentsofraccoonhumanstandoff — with duration in seconds
proximitytoa_patio — boolean, exactly as advertised
complaints_logged — because of course
For additional information about Toronto's urban wildlife management programme, please visit toronto.ca/nobusinesslikeraccoonbusiness or contact aprilfools2026@toronto.ca

Limitations
Data only available for Q1 of 2024 - they realized they were being watched and we had to go into hiding
Racoons may disagree with their characterization within this data
Successful green bin opening is counted even if nothing yummy was found within the green bin in question
Raccoon confidence level is normalized to mean raccoon confidence, which is ~1.8x average human confidence
Unit count accuracy may contain inaccuracies when counting baby raccoons due to how darn cute they are

If your youth clients enjoy working with their hands and want to build a skill that AI can’t easily replace while earning an income, this may be the opportunity they’ve been waiting for.

Did too long a bike ride yesterday, at -8°C, and had to take a cold bath when I got home to soothe my legs.

I'll be stronger for next time, though.

A sign Toronto’s election is unofficially underway? Attack ads target ‘failed mayor’ Olivia Chow The ads from A Better City Toronto hammer Mayor Olivia Chow over her record on public safety, affordability and gridlock.

Even though the 2026 election won't launch until May 1, ABC Toronto has already started launching attack ads against Mayor Olivia Chow. We need to not only ensure Chow gets re-elected, but also elect (and re-elect) progressives to council. #BikeTO #WalkTO #TTC #TOpoli www.thestar.com/news/gta/a-s...

I wonder what's the reason behind @joshmatlow.bsky.social voting against this snow clearing idea from NYC? Given the major snowfall from January which saw many sidewalks and bike lanes left unusable for weeks, it's worth pursuing whenever the City needs additional resources. #BikeTO #WalkTO #TOpoli

What are Open Streets?

Open Streets are recurring programs that temporarily open streets to people a d close them to cars.

Streets become places where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can walk, bike, play, socialize, and improve their health. They are an opportunity for people to experience their city streets in a whole new way.

Over 100,000 people participated in 2019, and support for bringing the program back remains extremely strong across the city.

The Open Streets Program supports community health, local businesses, and public space activation.
