An iconic vintage 1950s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and carved wood boomerang modernist pendant necklace by Danish-American artist/enamelist/silversmith Adda Husted-Andersen (1898-1990). Super rare iconic boomerang mid century modern design entirely handmade hand carved from a dark wood with hammered silver wire pierced the boomerang, and still hanging on the original black leather cord! Purchased with other pieces of mcm wood jewelry that are possibly also by the artist but are unsigned - see my other listings in my Ruby Lane shop. Husted-Andersen taught in NYC at the Craft Student's League and her work was exhibited as part of the 1946 landmark exhibition, "Modern Handmade Jewelry" at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in 1946 which also featured the work of Alexander Calder, Margaret de Patta, Sam Kramer, Annette Nancarrow, etc.
This unique wearable modern art pendant measures 2.75" long by 1.75" wide, and still hangs on the original 36" black leather cord. Weighs just over 10 grams total. Marked at back on the wood with the conjoined AA maker mark for Husted-Andersen. From the estate of a NYC collector who travelled the world for her career in publishing and purchased interesting and unique jewelry and objects along the way. Excellent vintage condition.

A sculptural one of a k ind vintage 1940s 50s handmade sterling silver and carved wood biomorphic modernist pendant. An incredible piece, entirely handmade, and really makes a statement! Sculpted hand carved wood in the style of such great biomorphic artists as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Jean Arp, and Isamu Noguchi! Held at center by crab claw-like prongs in a rounded rectangular frame with the prongs piercing the frame and becoming almost like little feet at the bottom, and the top prong becomes the bail at top. Measures 2.5" tall by 1.5" wide, and weighs 10.2 grams total. Unmarked. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. No doubt a one of a kind piece of wearable modernist art jewelry originally sold in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork that has been lost over the years. In any case, you'll never see another! From the estate of a NYC collector who travelled the world for her job in the publishing industry. Would look equally great on a black cord, a silver chain, or a neckring! I can provide a black cord at no extra charge if needed, just let me know when making the purchase. Excellent vintage condition.

A biomorphic modernist vintage 1950s handmade studio pottery abstract design tray/artwork by ceramicist Aviva Margalit of the Ein Hod colony in Israel. Ein Hod became an artists' colony in 1953. The driving spirit behind the project was Marcel Janco, an acclaimed Dada artist, who kept the village from being demolished by the security forces and convinced the government to let him build an artists' colony there instead. In 1957, in close proximity to one another, Itche Mambush and his wife Aviva Margalit opened pottery workshops in Ein Hod Artists Village, see my last photo for a short biography of the artist from the Information Center for Israeli Artists. Ten Ein Hod residents have won the Israel Prize, awarded annually on Israel Independence Day, including Genia Berger, one of the founders of the colony who won the prize in 1953, Zahara Schatz, for painting and sculpture in 1955, and Marcel Janco, for painting in 1967. According to Robert Nechin, who lives in the village, the artists working there today "are fully aware of the illustrious example of these great artists and scholars, who lived and are still living among them. This exceptional tray measures 12" across by 9.75" tall by 1.5" high at the rim. Signed at back as shown in the photos, "Margalit Ein-Hod Israel". Excellent vintage condition.

By 1963, architect Bruce Graham of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill developed designs for the Brunswick Building (now the Cook Country Administrative Building), including a monumental work for the plaza just west of the structure. He commissioned Joan Miró, known for his abstract paintings and sculptures composed of biomorphic shapes, to produce a monument that would complement Pablo Picasso’s planned sculpture for the new civic center (now Richard J. Daley Center) across the street.
After visiting Chicago to survey the site and designs for the building, Miró made this plaster maquette as a proposal. The commission was delayed, however, for nearly two decades, until 1980, when Mayor Jane Byrne launched new efforts to realize Miró’s design: a 40-foot-tall female figure with outstretched arms made of bronze, ceramic tiles, and cement. Miró’s Chicago was completed and dedicated on the artist’s 88th birthday, April 20, 1981.

Epic! It reminds me of the film Avatar. Scaled up, this fruiting body could be a living building with a giant overhanging roof with an organic skylight.
Love the angle of photography!

A large organic vintage 1940s 50s handmade sterling silver biomorphic modernist brooch. Entirely handmade in sterling silver wire and sheet representing the complexities of organic forms! Abstract design that works well as a brooch but can be worn lengthwise as a pendant too! I purchased this outstanding example of mid century modernist jewelry at a San Diego estate sale. It resembles the work of Harry Bertoia, who lived and worked in San Diego for many years, but it is unsigned. Unmarked except for a patent number on the pinback, but tested and guaranteed to be as described. Measures 2-1/2" by 1-1/2". Excellent vintage condition.

Jean Arp was born Hans Arp on September 16, 1886, in Strassburg. In Paris in 1914, he became acquainted with Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Amadeo Modigliani, and Pablo Picasso. In 1915, he moved to Zurich, where he executed collages and tapestries, often in collaboration with his future wife Sophie Taeuber (who became known as Sophie Taeuber-Arp after they married in 1922).
In 1916, Hugo Ball opened the Cabaret Voltaire, which was to become the center of Dada activities in Zurich for a group that included Arp, Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara, and others. Arp continued his involvement with Dada after moving to Cologne in 1919. In 1922, he participated in the Kongress der Konstruktivisten in Weimar and the Exposition Internationale Dada at Galerie Montaigne in Paris. Soon thereafter, he began contributing to magazines such as Merz, Mécano, De Stijl, and later to La Révolution surréaliste. Arp’s work appeared in the first exhibition of the Surrealist group at the Galerie Pierre, Paris, in 1925. In 1926, he settled in Meudon, France.
In 1931, Arp was associated with the Paris-based group Abstraction-Création and the periodical Transition. Throughout the 1930s and until the end of his life, he continued to write and publish poetry and essays. In 1942, he fled Meudon for Zurich; he was to make Meudon his primary residence again in 1946. The artist visited New York in 1949 on the occasion of his solo show at Curt Valentin’s Buchholz Gallery. In 1950, he was invited to execute a relief for the Harvard Graduate Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1954, Arp received the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale. A retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1958, followed by another at the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris, in 1962. Arp died June 7, 1966, in Basel.

A monochrome abstract sketch presenting an anatomical erosion study. It features a cluster of human figures rendered in varying degrees of detail, with some parts sharply defined and others faded or ghostly thin. The figures are interwoven and overlapping, depicting a sense of anatomical transformation. The background consists of lightly rendered geometric forms, with elements that seem to be both architectural and skeletal in nature.

An abstract, anatomical llustration showing a loose cluster of distorted human forms—faces, torsos, and limbs—entangled in a web of fine, chaotic lines. The figures are ghostly and incomplete, partially obscured by swirling filaments that resemble strands of hair. The overall effect is airy, weightless, and ambiguous, evoking both embryonic development and psychological fragmentation.

A monochromatic, abstract anatomical drawing depicting softened, partially erased human forms in a clouded, textured field. The figures are distorted and fused, with limbs and torsos barely distinguishable from the surrounding misty charcoal-like shading. The composition appears both dissolving and emerging, as if caught mid-transition between formation and decay.
