This young swan hanging around with the local Mutes has been causing some headaches. Inset shows it’s Bewick’s-sized but bill pattern (especially lhs) & head/bill structure closer - but not quite right - for Whooper. Could it be a hybrid? #birdhybrids

The darkness of the flanks suggest New Zealand Scaup x Tufted Duck perhaps?. I would rule out RND on flank panel shape. The bird behind appears to be a Tufted x Red-crested Pochard #birdhybrids

Picture from ornitho.ch by Nicolas Aregger in Alpnach (CH), Jan 11th. Speculation is Ring-necked x Tufted duck or x Lesser Scaup or even pure Lesser, which I exclude based on the nail. Thoughts?

A brown and speckled duck stands in shallow water amongst rocks and pebbles. It has a bluish-grey bill and a flash of green and orange on its wing.
This rather strange duck is currently visiting some of my local spots.
presumably a hybrid between a White-Cheeked Pintail from America and a Chestnut Teal from Australia

Buston Links - The female Blue winged Teal x Shoveler hybrid reappeared today with five-eight, week old, presumably (BWT x Shoveler) x Shoveler hybrid ducklings. Coming to a duckpond near you!!!! She is keeping the chicks well hidden but a couple did make it onto the photos. #NEbirding #Birdhybrids

Thanks for sharing this interesting bird! The slightly visible white spur on the flank and probable grey hue with the head shape sure makes it a candidate for a RND hybrid. But why not Common Pochard as the second parent? Probably you really documented the first :-) #BirdHybrids
