Gleaming the most gorgeous shade of cerulean blue, these Blue-gray Tanagers are a favorite of birders new to the tropics. This common species can be found (and heard!) both right in "downtown" Bocas as well as in farm fields and forest edges.

The ever-present Black Vulture is a favorite of mine, I will forever appreciate to a fantastic degree..they are the cleanup crew! Can you imagine if we didn't have vultures to take care of all the rotting, festering dead things that we'd ultimately find ourselves buried in up to our necks? So say a little thank you whenever you find yourself under a kettle of vultures, soaring into the sky to locate the dead stuff, near and far! Check out that wrinkled, bare dark skin that makes for a perfect bib to keep bits and pieces of death from mixing into it's feathers!

Two-by-two-by-two! These red-lored parrots now called Amazons, are about the size of a football with gleaming yellowish green with bursts of red on their wings and the lore, or forehead above the beak. Every night you'll see the parrots heading back to their noisy communal roost after a day out on the archipelago feeding on the fruiting and flowering trees of the moment.

This semipalmate sandpiper is one of our smaller plovers, this sandpiper species being migratory and therefore spending the winter with us down here in Panamá. Now they're heading north to breed for the spring/summer. Plovers are always large-eyed, running--stop, running--stop sandpipers and the semipalmated is fairly commonly seen among the plovers but forever a lovely sight to see with bright white constrasting against a beautiful mix of brown and black..with easy identification based on the flash of white above its black and orange beak and bright orange legs.
