In an otherwise undisturbed field of snow: A deep but small hole - about 3 inches across - is surrounded the marks of wing feathers more than a foot away on each side. Another similar set of marks can be seen in the background. It is the sign of an owl that has dived feet first to penetrate the snow to grab a vole while braking its fall with a strong beat of their wings.

We had a nocturnal visitor!

From the abundance of little meadow voles in our yard, there is now one (or two?) fewer.

Very cool walk around Roath Park Lake this morning. Saw a kingfisher in flight, over a dozen cormorants(!) and a heron. Then, on the walk back through Cathays Cemetery we saw and heard half a dozen squirrels all barking at each other - so cute!

Even when I (unwittingly) stood nearby, he did not quickly fly away. He was the only bird I saw that day, despite having a large supply of stale bread and a full brick of bird suet nearby. The brick of suet has been almost completely untouched for over a week.

Close-up of the lonely sparrow hiding in the dead herb roots. His behavior was very abnormal, and the entire day felt weird to me. The silence overhead all day was rather eerie. There should have been birds.

I heard... SILENCE.
