Automotive designer Emeline King (born 1957) became the first Black Woman Automotive Designer for Ford Motor Company. Her most notable work is the creation and interior design of the 1994 Mustang.

Born to enslaved parents in Orange, Virginia, Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879–1961) pioneered advocacy for Black women’s rights. Burroughs lived in Louisville from 1898 to 1909 before opening the National Training School for Women in Washington.
