The lizard dug a hole, and is now resting in his hollow log.

One of the big advantages of a "bioactive" reptile enclosure like Jerry's is that it does encourage natural behaviours. Having a soil-like substrate, a layer of leaf litter, and lots of isopods running […]

Tempting as it is to give that tail a boop/stroke I must resist, because that is the one and only way to annoy this lizard. Something touching his tail when he's inside his hollow log is the only thing that ever makes him hiss. Even getting some water on his tail while I'm watering the plants […]

More often than not this is the view I get of the scaly sausage: the end of his tail sticking out of his hollow log.

He absolutely loves that log, and spends a lot of his time just hanging out in there. I was very lucky to get it. Shortly after I bought Jerry a […]

Jerry the blue tongue is coming up on his 5th Gotcha Day.

This has triggered the annual Ordering of the Replacement UV-B Tube, and I've ordered some of his favourite foods and a spare basking lamp while I was at it. Meanwhile I've topped up the leaf litter layer […]

Why? I have no idea.

I'm pretty sure that Jerry is watching the TV. He's come to the cool end of his enclosure and is just sitting there with his head raised. Intrigued by the sound and movement, I guess.

It's Jerry's birthday! 5 years old today. His birthday present was 3 big blueberries. He got handed one, but had to find the other two.

I decided to give Jerry some enrichment with the Hol-ee Roller dog toy. The smaller holes are just the right size to wedge blueberries in, making Jerry work a bit for his mid-week treat.

Eastern Blue-tongue (Tiliqua scincoides)

New research shows that eastern blue-tongue lizards are born with adult-like learning ability. Photo: Associate Professor Martin Whiting, Macquarie University.

The Eastern Blue-tongue is silvery-grey with broad dark brown or blackish bands across the back and tail. Individuals on the coast usually have a black stripe between the eye and the ear which may extend along the side of the neck. The Blotched Blue-tongue is dark chocolate brown to black with large pink, cream or yellow blotches on the back, and a tail banded in the same colours. They can grow to almost 600 mm in total length, of which about 360 mm is head and body.

Early in the morning blue-tongues emerge to bask in sunny areas before foraging for food during the warmer parts of the day. During cold weather they remain inactive, buried deep in their shelter sites, but on sunny days they may emerge to bask. They shelter at night among leaf litter or under large objects on the ground such as rocks and logs.

They are found throughout much of New South Wales, west to Cobar. In the Sydney region, the Eastern Blue-tongue occurs on the coastal plain and in the lower Blue Mountains.

In #Spring, Australia’s #nonvenomous blue-tongue #lizard emerges from hibernation. They’re intelligent, friendly & beneficial to the garden. One now suns itself in our cat’s favourite spot, to warm up its cold-blooded body. She likes to leap over it, for fun. But the #BlueTongueLizard simply abides.

The lizard is home alone while we're in Brisbane. I check his basking spot infrared temperature sensor to see whether he's been active or not, and it seems that today he was being active at least up to the point that he somehow managed to break the sensor. Thanks […]

Had a little scare when I heard a rustle and saw a striped tail slither under a bush. I haven't seen a tiger snake here but I know they are around. I was very glad to see a chonky head and blue tongue emerge a few moments later 😅

To do: Clean up rockery!

Thanks to winter brumation it had been a few weeks since I'd seen Jerry, and had no evidence from the temperature sensors that he's been out in that time either, so I lifted up his basking rock to check on him. He just gave me "what do you want?" look, so I […]
