Typically #Bluethroats (Luscinia svecica) stay hidden in the reeds. I got very lucky yesterday when this male just popped out of the reeds on its own. Didn't use playback or anything. #BirdingHungary #birds #birding #BirdsSeenin2025
🌍🌏 Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica) The Bluethroat is a small songbird with a striking blue throat, especially in males during breeding season. Females have a duller brown throat. They have a rufous patch on their flanks and a distinctive, rufous-based tail. Found in a variety of wetland habitats across Europe and Asia, including marshes, bogs, and fens. They are migratory, breeding in the north and wintering in southern Europe, Africa, and Asia. Bluethroats are insectivores, foraging for insects on the ground or in low vegetation. Males are unmistakable with their bright blue throat bordered by black, white, and chestnut. Females and juveniles are much duller, lacking the vibrant blue throat patch. All Bluethroat subspecies have a rufous base to their tail feathers and a strong white eyebrow.
