Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows an otherworldly woman with pale skin, dark hair and opaque black eyes. Mysterious, misshapen creatures lurk in the shadows behind her. Book extract reads: ‘You should still leave well alone,’ Frai insisted. ‘These waifs and strays are no kin to you, or to the swan maidens.’ Before I could ask what she meant by that, the old dryad disappeared. ‘Daniel.’ Asca raised a hand to get my attention. ‘Never set foot in a fairy ring.’ From her expression, that was advice to equal ‘Never start a land war in Asia’. Then she disappeared as well. ‘Fairy rings.’ I looked at Eleanor. ‘More mushrooms.’ I tried to think if I’d ever seen a fairy ring in the pastures around Blithehurst, where the rare-breed cattle graze. I didn’t think I had. I’d never thought about that before. Eleanor looked startled. ‘Frai really doesn’t want us tangling with whoever these people are, does she?’ I had to admit that was unnerving. There couldn’t be much that scared the old dryad. ‘We know iron keeps us safe most of the time. Nothing can get at me when I’m inside the Land Rover. I know where to find rowan trees around here, and there are yew trees in the churchyard in the village. I can follow Asca’s advice and take some more protection with me.’ Eleanor didn’t look convinced.

'How do I know you'll keep your word? You're a southerner, an' all.' 'As Warden, my word is the empire's word. Normal hire rates.' 'Means nowt unless you shake on it.' He spat on his hand and held it out to her, with a gap-toothed leer. Foul old scarecrow. He expected her to back down. She spat on her own hand and held it out, palm up, staring him in the eye. 'Shake, then.' His forehead furrowed, then he slapped his hand against hers and turned his own palm up. She replicated the gesture. 'So, where d'you want this?' He gestured his head towards the cart. She turned to the cart, wiping her hand on the winding sheet draped over the corpse. 'Drive it to the House of the Dead and we'll take your details there.' The youth was still hovering nearby, waiting for a tip. She took a coin from her pocket and held it up. 'You know the way?' He nodded. 'Another of these for you if you show him the road.' She tossed the coin to him. He caught it and clambered up onto the cart with alacrity. Sooner him than her: the old man stank. She'd walk and take advantage of the fresh air while she could. And wash her hand at the fountain on the way past.

It's Book Quote Wednesday! Today's word: OLD. #Excerpt is from NO MORE SECRETS. #bookqw #womensfiction
Left side is book cover of THE RILL LORD, sixth book of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Cover has a stormy background with a red-robed sorcerer facing a distant fantasy city and magic. Right side is a text excerpt from THE RILL LORD: “Don’t you care that she’s his whore?” “Oh, are we down to name calling now? Well her choice of man is something men will hang on my name, seems to me, and none on yours!” “I bedded her. Was her first man.” “And the Old Mothers would tell you a woman’s first man is her first lesson in choosing badly! So I’ll put it straight. Aubrey’s my kin. She holds clan right. The man who shares her bed can live on Thegn lands and sit for the Witan.” Truth was, Nalf had half a mind to strangle Aubrey himself, woman or not, if only for that reason. “I sent her to bed Hans Thegn, get herself a King. But no! She had to make things complicated. Gets herself the one man no Kheld will stomach. But what do you think you can do about that? What can any of us do about it? Just up and kill her? For what? She’ll just say the Mother orders women to take what men they fancy, and she fancied that one!” So much talking about this was making Nalf queasy. “Besides, there’s more to this than Thegn honor. Hans Thegn wants our Aubrey close at hand, trusts her more than his own mother! If you think he was angry tonight, it’d be ten times worse if something happened to her! He’d break with us, he would, over that. I’m not going to get this close to putting a Kheld back on the throne, with Rill privileges, and then lose him over some woman’s choice in bedmates.”

Now that the cover is revealed, I can share quotes from THE RILL LORD. 😊
In this quote, Nalf isn't happy about his niece Aubrey choosing Dorilian for a bedmate, and he's even less happy being badgered about it by Fran. #WritingCommunity
Quote from Cursed Under London. Quote reads: ‘Sir? Good Sir? Excuse me?’ Lazare sighed inwardly, and painted his smile on for the approaching vampire. ‘I couldn’t help but notice that you appear to be afflicted, Sir.’ The vampire seemed to be a boy of around ten or eleven, although his eyes, like the eyes of any vampire, were old and tired. Like Lazare, the boy had a large pair of leathery wings, the same shade as the skin of his face. There was something familiar about him that at first Lazare couldn’t quite place. ‘Wulfric, Sir,’ continued the child, holding out a hand for Lazare to shake. Lazare accepted, politely. ‘Lazare de Quitte-Beuf, at your service. Um… have we met?’ ‘Possibly?’ Wulfric shadowed Lazare’s own expression as they tried to place one another. ‘Do you frequent the Moon and Werewolf? Upper Deptford?’ ‘Guilty as charged.’ He clicked his fingers. ‘You’re a pot boy there.’ Wulfric looked offended. ‘I’m the owner.’

‘Don’t you Smiths know anything?’ Stan demanded, by now too exasperated with the boy’s ignorance to be suspicious of his motives. ‘This is how folks had it in my great-grandfather’s day, all right? No rhymes, no sound-echoing, it’s all in the beat. Open your ears; let’s see if you have any memory at all. And don’t go adding or changing words in your memory: you listen to what I say exact.’ Stan Mackem sat back to share an old clan memory-chant with a small and irritating Smith boy. Now Peter Alder was a learned man With too much in his head to do him good. By guile and boldness, stealth, and lack of ruth, He thought to steal a fairy from its court And make of it a servant and a carl To weave his nettle-flax to garb of silk.

That time I got bored and shifted to iambic pentameter just for fun.
The Smith and Mackem fairy-smithing clans have different cultural practises. Smiths write things down. Mackems say it weakens the memory and feel it's vaguely sissy; they prefer to rely on old chants.
Lenore all but barged into the room. “Everything all right? Nice place. Nicer than I usually stay. That bed looks too soft.” “I think the beds are all of the same consistency.” Livesey ran her practiced eye over the furnishings. “We may have to bear with it. This isn’t a case of Goldilocks finding one that’s ‘just right.’” Solet couldn’t help but smile. “Goodness, that’s an old fable. My old nurse told me that one before I got my tribe markings.” “Humans have a strange capacity for remembering silly verses. While androids have the unfortunate capacity to remember everything.” “Speaking of remembering, is the map safe?” “Quite.” Livesey’s face softened suddenly as she remembered the datacube and its store of precious data. “Quite safe. Even if it weren’t I’ve copied all essential information, so if anyone takes the datacube itself, we’ll still have a copy.” “And if they take you with the cube?” “I’ll detonate it. And at the worst, wipe my memory core.” Livesey’s face took on a determined look. “I’m not letting them have this. It’s too fine to be handled by such lowly hands as I know would seek it.” “Like ours?” “I didn’t mean you. Or Faarax, or Lenore, or even Syndac. You’re good people, good to me. I meant Sygint and his ilk. They wouldn’t stop short of tearing my circuits apart to extract the data byte by byte.” No one laughed at this strange wordplay.

Quote from Cursed Under London. Quote reads: Lazare let the fact slide that the stranger had in fact found Lazare, after Amber had immediately reacted to a dangerous situation by flying off and leaving him. ’You’re the other one?’ Lazare asked. This stopped the stranger. ‘“Other”?’ He narrowed his eyes at Lazare. ‘You have human teeth. You’re not a vampire?’ Lazare shook his head. ‘But you have wings.’ Lazare nodded. ‘Did you… die, recently? Or, that is, did you fail to die and just end up alive and awake and… changed?’ Lazare nodded again. ‘He’s like you, mister,’ added Amber. ‘Like when you didn’t die the other night. Remember? Remember how I nearly ate you?’ The stranger sighed. ‘Yeah.’ He looked Lazare up and down. Lazare wasn’t sure that he liked the tone of face he was being appraised in. ‘So, I’m not the only one.'

We cannot fight them by traditional means, so we must persuade them by other methods.” “Again, there are those who will say we need neither fight nor persuade them, but simply carry on as we have been.” “What, have they talked you round to their way of thinking in my absence?” Brennan laughed. “I’m not such an old relic, Marten, as well you know.
