Partial text:
JUNE 25, 2012. Muscle car protest. Forty-three thousand SUVs jam Washington's fabled beltway to protest the Nader Tax, establishing a $1 monthly "atmosphere use fee" for every cubic centimeter of engine displacement over 1,500 cc. With the passage of the law in January, President Nader's approval rating fell from 24% to a term low of .66%.
JULY 5, 2044. Heads of state of 21 nations and 53 NGOs turn out for funeral of Earth's last elephant. The great beast was electrocuted by an illegal power tap in suburban Lagos, where it had apparently retreated from the brush fires raging through central Africa. It was previously thought that the last elephant had been killed in 2036, when the "Dumbo virus" raged through the world's zoos.
JULY 11, 2189. Renewed fighting in Los Angeles between the Earl of Water and the Count of Electricity. Disorder spreads to freeways as gangs of "underpass boys" take 8 and 5, setting fire to stalled cars.
One of my favorite features of @locusmag.bsky.social was Terry Bisson's This Month In History. These mini-sketches were scattered through the mag in the bottom corner à la Sergio Aragones' Mad Marginals.
