🌎 Red-crested cardinal (Paroaria coronata) Not closely related to the true cardinals, the red-crested cardinal (also known as the Brazilian cardinal) is a striking bird with a bright red head, crest, and upper breast, contrasting with a grey back and white underparts. Native to southeastern South America (Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina), it has also been introduced to Hawaii and Puerto Rico. They are often found in semi-open areas, including parks and degraded forests, and forage on the ground in pairs or small groups, feeding on seeds, fruits, and insects.
