i made tubes that let you go fast, they're functionally the same thing as doors but less boring and predictable

#Burgertale version 1.32 is released! Tons of bugfixes and quality-of-life stuff, all "red herring" Crystal Burgers that you couldn't actually get before are in place in new accompanying levels, and there's SEVEN new bosses! #gamedev #indiedev #metroidvania

As you might guess, the Maths Quiz sign inflicts you with Confused if you touch it.
I don't usually use placeholder assets but this is one of the times I did.
Working on level gimmicks for the #Burgertale cyberpunk world! Finished glowy neon signs that hurt you when you touch them and inflict an ailment relevant to the product advertised (e.g. the maths quiz inflicts Confused) and started work on hovercar platforms (placeholder art atm) #gamedev #indiedev
Yes, I didn't stop to think about how the physiology of a Doorie would work until now. I think having them be absolutely horrifying when they open up is the only right choice, since so many other monsters are basically just cute animals at the moment.
For some stupid reason I decided that the miniboss fight against The Seven Cowboys needed 7 unique sprites so I've been drawing all evening.
I went for having them be monsters that currently only show up as NPCs, like Doories, to blur the "designated friend/foe" line. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
No stars in the background, because this is also underground like the rest of the Nexus.
I had a cool idea for these neon signs spelling out the final boss' monologue but it might get cut after some story rewrites changed her personality...
Oh yeah, and I'm back from my #Burgertale development break as well! Got tons of bug reports from a friend and I'm slowly dipping my proverbial toes into the final two worlds. The backgrounds for Cowloon are the most detailed ones in the game so far. #gamedev #indiedev #pixelart
Version 1.30 & the Lake Slushi story update Is finally released! This is a megaupdate expanding the game's size by almost 50%, including finishing all of the accessible-but-incomplete levels and adding tons of quality of life improvements! #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale

Every release feels like reaching the goal at the last second. Well, not quite there yet...
After another full evening, the super testing crunch is finally done. All the new stuff has been beaten into working condition, apart from some enemy balancing! With a little luck I'll be able to complete and release the update before the end of the year. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
Turns out all these out-of-bounds palm trees and grass blobs makes the walls go from super boring to kind of acceptable.
A room full of ice physics, and spikes that curse you with permanent ice physics if you touch them. On second thought maybe you don't need that treasure THAT badly.
If you don't think the ice world is cool enough (or too cool), there's a volcano next door. Yes I'm really good at worldbuilding and area planning why do you ask.
Salad Rosco, the third strongest pirate. I hope you like fighting him because you'll do it A LOT.
7 more hours of supertesting done... movie world, Great Sea & first part of the pirate story arc is done. Great Sea had so bad flow I pretty much needed to pause and tweak platforming sections on a per-room basis. (Also placed like 800 decorative props to liven it up) #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
It's called "Battle WITH a Dark Hero" because you're not always battling AGAINST your rival...
The village the most loyal to Lord Burgerface, hence the flags.
Sadly I couldn't secure the license to The Gears Go Awry so you'll have to settle for the soundtrack I composed.
We know less about the bottom of the oceans than we do outer space, but who said they needed to be mutually exclusive?
First 6 hours of supertesting done, new Burger Nexus secrets + retro world + mushroom world have had their issues ironed out. Citadel ALMOST complete apart from some flow/time issues with final escape & enemy bugs. After that, 7 worlds / 11 individual "levels" to go... #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
Just when you think it's over, you'll realize you're at the halfway mark at best.
After writing tons of cutscenes and doing some misc polish passes I think everything in the update is feature-complete, which means... I can start TESTING it for realsies, whereupon I'll probably find like a million NEW things that needs to be done / fixed. Yay. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
(It won't give you a harder version of the entire level, it's just referring to the Burger Flip sequence)
The Great Sea finally gives you some non-frozen water to explore.
Tiled walls, to capture that bathroom/pool feeling.
The giant purple dinosaur is not officially named, but she'd probably go with Florencezilla to maximize brand recognition.
#Burgertale "The Big Update" status report:
- Retro world finished
- Movie world finished apart from cutscenes
- Citadel finished
- Lake Slushi story missing the final level (incl. cutscenes)
All of the above is mostly untested so bug/flow/balance fixing will probably take ages. #gamedev #indiedev
Had this really mean idea for a secret where if you follow your instincts and break the tempting crate, you're locked out of the slideable passage until you reload the entire level. (It's a big secret too, to reward you for the effort / properly paying attention) #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
If you go overboard with this system you'll get a LOT of health. Too bad it's all temporary though.
On a more serious #gamedev note, I added a system inspired by Hollow Knight's Lifeblood where you can get additional temporary hitpoints, or convert all your health into (a larger amount of) temporary HP. There will be even more ways to break the balance than ever before! #indiedev #Burgertale
(Don't have skeletons in your closet. Have them in a pool instead, to keep them hydrated.)
This wasn't even MEANT to be a joke, but I'll keep it in. Happy little accidents...
#gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
Though I guess some people might've noticed it and thought it was an intentional reference because of how hopeless the situation is or something?
Despite everything, it's still you.
For a VERY long time mirrors has given you this Kafka painting reenactment where you see the back of your head reflected, now I FINALLY remembered to add some special case code that shows your face when you have the "look into background" animation active. #gamedev #indiedev #pixelart #Burgertale
Ironically, after all these new cutscenes are added Terse might be the most verbose character in the game
Terse has pretty much been a bootleg Chara so far so one of the big things I've been adding is a bunch of proper character development for them. Also a proper boss fight... where you fight together against ANOTHER boss #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
(She's TECHNICALLY correct)
The retro level also canonically takes place in the past, and you can meet the Three Queens there. I'm toying with the idea to let you prevent the time shenanigans from happening in the first place (or rather, go as planned instead of breaking the timeline) as an alternate ending. #Burgertale
(and yes, even being aware her name is Gupreda is a missable event which adds another layer of complexity)
One thing I maybe should've thought through better is that Gupreda forgets her grandchildren ever existed when you're done with the time loop shenanigans, so I have to have alternate versions of a LOT of her dialogue depending on if you've seen that event or not. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
The only way you'll get hurt by these spikes is if you run into them on purpose.
I've started doing this "ambient spike traps" thing. They're not placed anywhere they're actually gonna be an obstacle to the player, but having a little danger sprinkled in makes it FEEL more like level design even if it's just a dedicated cutscene or shortcut room. #gamedev #gamedesign #Burgertale
If you think it looks like a confusing mess NOW, just wait until you try playing it
Putting some final touches on level design... I'm trying to get the big update done before the end of december, most of the remaining work is scripting cutscenes and writing dialogue. Actually test playing it all is going to be a giant undetaking, too... #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
The criminal underworld level just wouldn't feel right without gambling so I added slot machines. Internally they just roll a dice and the reel animation is just visual fluff to slowly reveal the outcome. (The odds are set such that you'll always lose in the long run) #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
Bet nobody was expecting THIS debate, huh?
Since some people still haven't accepted that videogames are art, I'm gonna use an uno reverse card and take the battle to them instead...
#gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
(Does not open from this side.)
I always felt kinda bad for the shortcut blocks being alive and the player being forced to actually kill something if they wanted shortcuts, so now I've replaced them with a magical construct you don't have to feel bad about breaking open. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
The only thing that's missing now is me learning proper art skills, huh?
Made some decorative murals for a lore hallway. Instead of carefully (and SLOWLY!) placing tiles to build the images, they're made from two layers: a lowrez pixel art image scaled up 8 times, and a mostly-transparent "tile edges" texture repeated over the entire room. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
This is the source, a joke I made all the way back in the FIRST DEMO RELEASE like 2 years ago.
And this is the payoff, a store I added to the game for this upcoming update. (There's no pride drink since I don't consider it a deadly sin 🌈, instead you get betrayal - which was made up by Dante and isn't canon.)
One of my weaknesses is that I can't just make a throwaway joke and be done with it. I obsessively MUST make any place, people or event mentioned in the joke show up in the game later, which usually means making a bunch of new assets, implementing items and so on... #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
The oldschool sepia filter makes the debug objects (which are on a higher layer that isn't affected by the filter) stand out a lot better, too!
I kinda regret saving all of the movie world staff-only areas for last... they're sandwiched between the regular level bits and super hard to find so I keep losing track of them. Finally figured out a way to mark them with debug objects so I can FIND them lol #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
What is a movie critic? A miserable little pile of opinions!
1-on-1 fights are overrated, anyway
Luckily, the smell of this attack isn't simulated.
[Insert Metal Gear joke here]
Slowly grinding through drawing the actual graphics for the batch of new bosses, after that it's a giant pile of cutscenes to script out... Florence was THE most work so far, since all her attacks have unique costumes AND backgrounds. #gamedev #indiedev #pixelart #Burgertale
The road less travelled (because it literally didn't exist before today)
Quality of life thing: there's gonna be a warp in the Fruitian Village now so backtracking between upper and lower Nugget Mines gets easier. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
Added a second spell and melee equip slot. Your main gear isn't working in the current fight? You can have something situational-and-too-costly-for-general-use on standby, no pausing required! #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
Astute fans of Racing Lagoon might recognize one of the terms used here.
Taking a break from crunching out boss code by planning some puzzles. I just can't make good puzzles when staring into the screen, I NEED to be distraction-free on physical paper for that. #gamedev #indiedev #Burgertale
