Martin Koenigsberg’s review of Mosquito Intruders - Target Burma: The RAF’s Daring Low-Level Mosquito Operations When the RAF finally got the Mosquito over to the India/Burma theatre, it was a significant upgrade over the Beaufighter it replaced and supplanted as a two engine Intruder in WWII. The Intruder missi...

Martin Koenigsberg’s review of Forgotten Armies : The Fall of British Asia, 1941-1945 I really liked this book, even though it can't quite tell the story as fully as I thought necessary. I think maybe the book I was looking for would have to be a Thousand pages and these guys gave out ...

My grandparents together - my grandfather in his BIA uniform and my grandmother in a sheer Burmese blouse (known as an eingyi) with flowers in her hair. Both are looking off to the right. At the bottom it says “Okkalah Electric Photo Studio, Rangoon”.

A year later, on that fateful day of 19 July 1947, my father was leading a security patrol just as the news of the assassination of Bogyoke Aung San and his cabinet members broke; their vehicles were pelted with stones by angry, heartbroken people in the street since the assassins were reported to be in uniform.

For his dissidence against the military junta that rose up in the wake of the assassinations, my father then spent much of my childhood in prison under a death sentence for high treason. If my father was a hero to many who knew him, my mother was a martyr as she raised us children on her own while running a business at the same time, while he languished in Rangoon Central Jail.

When I first came across this photo as a seven year old, I flew into a jealous rage, not knowing the man was my imprisoned father. I crumpled the photo and threw it away. My mother found it under a chair later, hence the crease. A couple of years later, I remember visiting my father in jail, with an armed escort; the soldier's big Bren gun and ammo belt made an indelible impression on a nine year old.

The saddest thing is that families in Burma today face the same situation as mine when I was growing up. I do hope there will be peace in our time."

"My father was a young student activist from
Myitkyina called Hla Pe who became an officer in the Burma Independence Army.

He met my mother Daw Tin Tin through her older sisters Ludu Daw Amar and Naga Daw Oo whom he first met in Bhamo where they accompanied Thakin Pe Tint on AFO business [the Anti-Fascist Organisation - the precursor of Burma's Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League] and to discuss the arrest of Daw Amar's husband U Hla as a Japanese collaborator by the British forces re-occupying Mandalay.

In 1946, my parents were married by U Razak (her former headmaster in Mandalay, now Bogyoke Aung San's Minister for Education) at his home in Yangon, and the newlyweds were given an army residence to live in on Shwedagon Pagoda Road.
