Amir Kianpour: “Calling for an Immediate Ceasefire Is the Minimum Precondition for Any Democratic Coalition” Rejecting both war and the Islamic Republic is not optional politics, but the basic threshold for any democratic coalition grounded in life and dignity. The first meeting of the “Congress for the Freedom of Iran” was held in London on March 28 and 29, 2026 (8 and 9 Farvardin 1405), with the participation of a large number of political activists. According to the organizers, the conference brought together more than 400 party activists, political figures, and campaigners. The gathering took place at a moment when Iran is facing multiple layers of pressure, including the U.S.-Israeli war, regional conflicts, and internal repression. Some critics, however, believe that the discussions raised at the congress did not correspond to the country’s current realities and that vital issues, especially war, received too little attention. In this context, Amir Kianpour, a researcher in philosophy and politics, spoke with Zamaneh and criticized the content of the meeting, describing it as an example of being “out of sync” and marked by a deep alienation from the actual conditions in Iran. In his view, this alienation is not only political but also ethical, and shows that part of the opposition is discussing and debating within a space detached from the country’s lived realities. As Kianpour describes: Regardless of the composition of forces and, indeed, the content of the discussions, what was shocking about the “Congress for the Freedom of Iran” was how out of sync it was, and how deeply disconnected it was from the real and concrete conditions of Iran today. This lack of synchrony and rupture are both political and ethical. In this congress, we saw an opposition that was mostly speaking from another world, another time, and another country; from a country that, apparently, is not under U.S.-Israeli aggression and attack, does not face the danger of partial occupation, and is not under the pressure of fear, the destruction of structures, and the collapse of citizens’ everyday lives. Referring to the atmosphere that prevailed at the congress, Kianpour says many of the speakers talked about an Iran that seemed detached from the current crisis. He sees this approach as a kind of failure of political judgment and stresses that every political action must begin from concrete reality and existing conditions, not from abstract or idealized imaginations. Criticizing the marginal place of war in the meeting, this researcher emphasizes that ignoring issues such as bombardment and its consequences does not simply mean omitting one topic from discussion, but suspending the very possibility of politics itself. He adds that raising themes such as democracy and welfare, without regard for conditions in which citizens’ lives and the country’s infrastructure are under threat, cannot serve as the basis for a real and effective conversation. Kianpour says: The speakers talked about democracy and pluralism, which is all very good; but for whom? For people who may not be alive tomorrow? They spoke of welfare, but one must ask: on the basis of which infrastructures? Especially under conditions in which the country’s fundamental infrastructures, and its water and soil, are at risk of destruction and lasting environmental contamination. I also wrote in a personal note that under today’s conditions, “No to war” is not merely a topic of discussion, but the basic precondition for discussion itself. Kianpour also refers to the way war was raised in the final section of the congress and describes it as disproportionate to the nature of the crisis. According to him, treating war as a subject for voting or ordinary disagreement reflects a false understanding of the dimensions of the issue. He emphasizes that opposition to war, like certain other foundational principles, should not be posed as one option among political options, but should instead be regarded as the precondition of any democratic dialogue and coalition. Kianpour said to RadioZamaneh: “No to war,” just like “No to the Islamic Republic,” is not a matter for voting; these are constitutive conditions for the possibility of dialogue and of any democratic coalition grounded in common sense and empathy toward their fellow citizens. Politics is not an electoral menu in a free market in which you choose war or no to war as one option among others; these are the minimum conditions for the possibility of politics. Later in the conversation, Kianpour raises the question of what, fundamentally, “one’s understanding of politics” is. He stresses that politics is not simply about the management of power or the distribution of resources, but concerns before all else the possibility of realizing a dignified life. From this perspective, rejecting war and insisting on preserving the possibility of life are the initial conditions of every political act. Referring to the slogan of “life” in the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, he also emphasizes the necessity of linking the rejection of war with the rejection of despotism, saying that both must be posed simultaneously as foundational preconditions, not as matters for debate and bargaining. In his view, these two elements together create the ground from which politics, as a sphere of living and acting together, can begin to have meaning. As Kianpour notes: Defending the possibility of living and of a dignified life is the primary condition of political action. That simultaneous “no” to foreign aggression and “no” to the Islamic Republic guarantees a dignified life, and these two cannot be separated from one another. Together, they form a threshold and a gateway from which politics, as the sphere of living and acting together, only then becomes possible. In conclusion, Kianpour stresses that under present conditions, the demand for an immediate ceasefire is the minimum precondition for the formation of any rational and democratic coalition. In his view, the main problem with this congress was not merely the failure to foreground the slogan “No to war,” but the absence of a deeper understanding of the requirements of politics under conditions of crisis—conditions that, he argues, must begin from people’s real lives and the immediate threats against them, not from abstract scenarios far removed from the field of reality.
