This photo shows a hand holding up a vinyl record album — Chet Baker Quartet: Jazz at Ann Arbor. It was recorded at the Masonic Temple, 327 South Fourth Avenue — just a few blocks from my apartment — on May 9, 1954. The concert was organized by local jazz promoter and disc jockey Ollie McLaughlin, who arranged to have it taped. The cover is clean and elegant — white background with the title in black and red type, and a charming line-drawing illustration of five flapper-style figures dancing in a row. In the background you can see a wonderfully curated space — shelves packed with vinyl records (a Wes Montgomery album is visible), a dark sculptural bust on a pedestal, vintage binoculars, a small wooden mirror, and various other collectibles.
