CILIP conference – navigating with imposter feelings In this post I talk about the CILIP 2023 conference, focusing particularly on imposter feelings at conferences, and a session on imposter syndrome and personal branding

Seeing lots of posts from #UKSG2026 on imposter feelings, and making the most of conferences. This is reminding me to the great session on Overcoming imposter syndrome and building a personal brand, at #CILIPconf23, which I wrote about, along with my own experience.

Now at #CILIPconf24, I’m attending a session on The Entrepreneurial Leader. This is a direct response to Masud Khokar’s challenge to the sector at #CILIPconf23 last year. The session is chaired by Duncan Anthony, Chief Commercial Officer at CILIP.

At #CILIPconf23 last year, when getting ready for the evening, I listened to an episode of the FT Working It podcast on How to Master the Art of Schmoozing (mentioned in my blog post about the event). Now I’m randomly listening to the latest episode, How to make your mark as a leader! #CILIPconf24

Ethical framework The Ethical Principles and Code provides a framework to help library and information professionals who are members of CILIP, to manage the responsibilities and sensitivities which figure prominently in their work.

"Professionalism is about lived ethics, about reflective practice, and the difference that makes to your users on the front line" - @NickPoole1 at #CILIPConf23

"We have always been just a community of human beings who belive in empowerment through literacy and knowledge" - @NickPoole1 celebrates the absolute brilliance of our @CILIPinfo community, right back through our 125 years of chartership and conferences. #CILIPConf23

"[if you realise you were mistaken]§You're allowed to change your mind. And as institutions you have to, or you're dead" - @Sathnam giving wise advice on the only sensible way to respond to what you should do with what the evidence and facts tell you #CILIPConf23

"Get over the fear of failure. Build fast, fail fast, learn fast, and move on" says @mkhokhar: we need to build a startup culture in the information profession and focus on continuous improvement - learn from industries that aren't libraries!

Inspiring #CILIPConf23 keynote!

Really excellent point by @mkhokhar: an empathetic manager is absolutely valuable, but as leaders we should work to build *structural compassion* into our organisational culture and operations, not merely functional compassion by a single manager (who might leave)! #CILIPConf23

"This might seem idealistic but I truly believe libraries are the backbone of humanity" - @Im_Negomi's first shift in a library felt like she'd come home. So glad to welcome so many idealists to their home as future leaders and members of the #CILIP125 list! #CILIPConf23

For tonight's winners of the @CILIPinfo #CILIP125 list, my advice to you is "Shout about it at every opportunity" - let people know your achievements! Wise words from @ayubkhan786 here at #CILIPConf23

I also find it interesting that we’ve heard a lot about the climate bomb that is bitcoin mining, but very little about the carbon footprint of AI tools, with the massive data centres required to train models. #CILIPConf23

Every query, every prompt, every bit of text or data analysed via AI, is all being added to the dataset, and there is no transparency at all to that process. Enormous amounts of data being fed to massive corporations to exploit, yeah, I’m twitching nervously… #CILIPConf23

Hugely important in certain fields, healthcare particularly, with patient data. Have users read the Ts and Cs? How is the data being fed into AI tools via users’ queries and experimentations governed, managed and safeguarded? #CILIPConf23

I’m fascinated by the implications of feeding data and content wholesale into AI tools that users almost certainly don’t have the right to do so. How do we manage this legally? #CILIPconf23

My own experience with the challenges of digital copyright highlights just how far legislation lags behind, it’s barely got to grip with ebooks and the licensing of digital content - the idea that legislators legislation will ever keep up with AI is laughable. #CILIPConf23

I’m fascinated by the potential of AI but also concerned by how rapidly the adoption of these tools is being taken as an inevitability, and the massive ethical issues just handwaved as unfortunate or problematic but not enough to stop use. #CILIPConf23

AI has been the theme of the conference so far, and it’s straight into another one, a panel discussion on data and AI. Very topical with the recent lawsuits in the US against Google and Microsoft. #CILIPConf23

Conference Twitter is weird. You’re live-tweeting and replying and chatting to people when you’re also sat next to them in silence. 🤫 Like @PhdGeek and I right now. #CILIPConf23

So who is going to be at the CILIP conference tomorrow that I need to look out for and/or hug? Other than @librarianth @PhdGeek @mkhokhar and @NickPoole1, of course. #CILIPConf23
