That's why @fji.law takes its work so seriously. For #NationalSecondChanceMonth, FJI is highlighting why smarter approaches to #CJReform matter to creating safer, more vibrant communities: fji.law/what-we-do/ (2/2)

As an American, I don't particularly have a dog in the fight. But as a #cjreform guy, I appreciated the version w/ prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, who was on the fiver bf Churchill.
I reconnected with him after @americanbar.org Criminal Justice Section's Spring Meeting last week. The #CJReform space can be a lonely one. I'm glad to work with people like Roger who understand how @fji.law's efforts help make communities safer by holding those in power accountable (2/2)
She and Talarico where both in the Lege while I was lobbying on #cjreform. I'm telling you from direct, personal experience that she was consistently a better progressive ally. You don't have to believe me, but it's true.
Meanwhile, Talarico moved HDs to run; not HUGE community ties there.
IMO it's the other way around. #Cjreform has never been a core identity of the Democratic Party, and #cjreformers are a minority in both parties. I've been part of successful horseshoe-theory coalitions to combine R and D minorities on narrow goals, but that's no longer possible in the Trump era.
For a couple of cycles, Just Liberty had a bipartisan (really transpartisan) campaign to put #cjreform in both state party platforms. On abortion/culture war stuff they openly acknowledged demanding unconstitutional things, either as base-rallying symbols or hoping to challenge precedents.
I identify w/ the German ski jumper w/ a paralyzing fear of heights who for some reason chose a profession that triggered it. These are my people.
I loved the research/policy-wonk parts of #cjreform; I enjoyed the public-facing parts abt as much as visits to my maternal grandpa's rendering plant.
Huge news, Representative Carmine Gentile has announced he is not running for re-election. A great friend, strong progressive legislator & extremely generous person, who championed seniors, people with disabilities, environment, civil rights, #cjreform & public higher education #mapoli

I served as a panelist during the Justice & Reentry Public Forum. I also joined my #FCLAA peers for Hill Days to share why @fji.law's work matters statewide.
Thanks to all who came together to articulate the value of meaningful #CJReform in our communities. (2/2)
Policymakers telling people to believe in themselves while overseeing systems that refuse to believe in them... That's not just empty rhetoric. That's turning cruelty into culture. That's choosing harm over hope. #EndManMins #incarceration #parole #cjreform www.themarshallproject.org/2026/01/16/l...
Not only does #Florida pursue harsher sentences, but the state also incarcerates a higher percentage of its residents than any democracy on the planet. Punitive approaches make communities less safe.
That's why @fji.law takes #CJReform work seriously. Join me today for this important discussion.
In 2025, @fji.law earned an important victory in the quest for meaningful #CJReform when the #TristinMurphyAct became law.
Looking forward to joining peers and stakeholders in #Tallahassee this week for a joint forum to create long-term solutions for justice-impacted individuals. See you there!

Data, lived experience, and research make clear: States should continue working toward fine reform and fee elimination DESPITE - and, arguably, *because of* - chaotic #fiscal conditions. #cjreform

Spoken like someone who has never paid attention to consent decrees at local police departments for the last 40-50 years.
A lot of the precedents for sweeping aside moral/legal constraints on government were pioneered in bipartisan opposition to #cjreform, and now those tactics have metastasized.

Donating on this #GivingTuesday provides the 98,941 people housed in these carceral facilities who account for 52% of the total exposure to extreme heat in the U.S. a chance at meaningful #CJReform. Invest with FJI below. (2/2)
🧵 (1/2) At its core, @fji-law.bsky.social's mission is to create long-term solutions toward #CJReform. That's why I was thrilled to reconnect with my favorites in this space: Mission: Launch, Inc., Aventiv, R3 Score, & Dress for Success AZ during the #BankOn100MillionLA Hackathon earlier this month.
Apropos of nothing, I once wrote a jingle about Lady Justice for a campaign we did trying to get #cjreform stuff into both party platforms. archive.org/details/Plat...
This is not new, but Dems didn't complain when Obama launched the program in his second term, then Biden expanded it, and now it's being misused, as plenty of #cjreform folks predicted when it rolled out.
As somebody who for two decades constructed actual bipartisan, red-state coalitions to pass numerous #cjreform bills, speaking to "real America" is about speaking to values over identity. But you don't have to squelch identity conversations. You just have to make sure the values messages get out. 🧵
You and Elizabeth are both correct. She's right no Dem candidate ever ran on the slogans you're irate about, and punching left over them in 2025 mirrors rightwing rhetorical strategies more than reality. You're right most Dems DGAF about #cjreform and under Biden threw the movement under the bus.
🧵 (1/2) #MLM: I've worked on sentence reduction, reentry issues, and as a funder across the advocacy spectrum, but true #CJReform incorporates all those solutions and much more.
🧵 (1/2) Fair chances matter for #CJReform. Earlier this month, the United States Senate passed the Second Chance Reauthorization Act of 2025 and @fji-law.bsky.social joined over 350 orgs as signatories on a letter of support for the bill. [h/t @csgovts.bsky.social]
"Gainesville, Florida holds the distinction of being the first city in the state to adopt a Fair Chance Hiring Policy (FCHP)," the @leagueofcities.bsky.social writes. @fji-law.bsky.social urges other municipalities to follow Gainesville's lead with these anti-recidivism measures. #CJReform (2/2)
In TX, those IRL democratic processes stopped functioning in the 2019-2021 period, by the end of which, I began openly using the term "fascism" in public writing to describe the new worldview of Texas governance. For the 20 years prior to that the #cjreform movement here got a fair amount done.
