Pattern and coloration of the wings are specific to this single species – if you see this pattern of wing spots, it’s this species-- eastern half of the United States and a very small section of extreme southeast Canada.

A female calico pennant balanced on a tiny twig sticking out from the left side of a bare plant. The background is a blurred green. The dragonfly's body is black with yellow spots along the top. it has four wings. The top wings are clear except for veining, two separated black spots toward the far end of the wing, and tiny black spots toward the interior. The bottom wings are same except for black marks on the inside of the wings that go from top to bottom.
