“The current evidence does not support that the benefits of involuntary treatment outweigh the risks and costs. In addition, there are questions around medical ethics, human rights, social justice, the role of lawyers as gatekeepers to care and potential harms.” #ableg #abpoli #CareIsNotForced

Sign the Petition Stop Bill 53: Protect Rights, Demand Evidence-Based Care in Alberta

The AB gov tabled Bill 53, the “Compassionate Intervention Act” — a dangerous expansion of state power. Bill 53 allows forced treatment and indefinite detainment of individuals in facilities that may lack standards and regulated staffing.

This is one of the reasons why we are opposed to forced treatment. In cases like this, people are unable to leave.

Critics speak out against Alberta’s proposed involuntary care act for people with drug addictions Some question why the province doesn’t improve the existing voluntary system, argue the proposed legislation could infringe on Charter rights

“I came out of there just a better drug user, because all we did was just sit around and talk crap to each other, like glorifying our drug use,” Brandon Shaw of @4bharmredux.bsky.social

What the government of #Alberta calls, “compassionate intervention”, it’s called torture by the United Nations.

4,000+ youth forced into withdrawal under PChAD (2016–2024). How many died after release without a treatment plan? #ableg is expanding involuntary care for adults without showing outcomes.
Danielle Smith said “let’s just give it a try” .. um, let’s not.

Forced treatment shatters trust and relationships. Some can rebuild, but unfortunately @heartforward.bsky.social never had the chance to do that with her teenage daughter Zoe who died shortly after the 2nd time she was confined to forced care in #AB via PChAD.

Forcing people into drug treatment is on the political agenda. Here's what the evidence says | CBC News Across Canada, there’s a growing number of political leaders proposing to force people into treatment for drug addiction, despite inconclusive evidence about its effectiveness.

As an organization #MSTH is opposed to involuntary care. We have seen the aftermath of broken relationships and lives lost.
