Note to Selfie There we were at the Carnival of Cultures, surrounded by a veritable bounty of performers, marching past in glorious costumery and this guy found a perch and spent what seemed to be at least 4-5 minutes eyes glued to his phone screen filming or live streaming himself. And whilst I assume the intention of such videos/live streams is to show how much fun you're having 'in the moment', the irony is that in doing such a thing, you're no longer in the moment - you're in a bubble of you and your phone and are no longer experiencing the event.

Roller Dancers Right behind the Roller DJs came the roller dancers at Berlin's Carnival of Cultures. I found these guys totally mesmerising to watch - I guess it's a combination of the familiarity of seeing someone dance, but mixed with this different medium, a wheel-induced fluidity was there which isn't normally present for a dancer. Perhaps hard to convey in a photo, but I like all the shapes and poses being held in this particular moment.

Vivid Costumes Well it's the first day of December, the darkest month of the year (well at least up here in Northern Europe). What better way to get rid of the S.A.D. than by remembering the vibrancy of the annual Carnival of Cultures in Berlin. Each of the participants in this group has a completely unique look, everything item of clothing is different, each hair style is unique, in fact the only unifying element is the 'sceptre' type of thing they are carrying. And yet, despite all the uniqueness they appear as a completely coherent and unified display. Wonderful!

No Laughing Matter The moment I saw these Carnival of Cultures participants my immediate thought was one of awe and sympathy for the rear end performer - what a job, walking and dancing 4-5km hunched over whilst looking at your performance partner's arse. Return of the Carnival Queen I was delighted to see the queen of Berlin's carnival appear again, this time bedecked in fiery red and emerald green. Last time I saw her it was a more turquoise and black affair. Either way, there is no way to miss an outfit like this!

Carnival Of Cultures 2025 Now that my Mallorca Mondays have wrapped up (for the time being), and given the drawing in of the days and the onset of autumn, I thought it apt to pick the annual Carnival of Cultures in Berlin as the new Monday theme. So tune in every Monday for the foreseeable future to get a vivid bright and colourful image to warm your soul. This year the Carnival relocated from its usual Hasenheide route and instead came to our new neighbourhood - marching straight down Frankfurter Allee.

Now that my Mallorca Mondays have wrapped up (for the time being), and given the drawing in of the days and the onset of autumn, I thought it apt to pick the annual Carnival of Cultures in Berlin as the new Monday theme.
