Two recent (not 10 years old) volumes on the historiography of two supposed turning points in the Western Middle Ages - Charles Martel’s victory over the Ibero-Muslims in 732 at Poitiers, and a critical analysis of the Hundred Years War as a major step in the establishment of the medieval state apparatus in France and England. Recently (the past ~6ish wks), I’ve been looking at the #historiography of the #MiddleAges ( #CharlesMartel and #the100YearsWar here) to edify my own thinking about certain aspects of my #thesis on #AndrewJohnson. It’s a tangential way of approaching my research and I think it’s paying dividends.

Hey @profgabriele.com (where did DMP go?!), and any other #medievalists who might want ti chime in: Why is there so much debate over where the Battle of 732 took place? It’s literally 1 mi from Old Poitiers and maybe 60(?) from Tours. The battlefield is a neat place to visit, btw. 🗃️ #CharlesMartel
