I primi anni settanta furono magici anche per il jazz che andava lentamente a perdere il suo status di musica leader. "Live At Slugs'" è un gioiello nascosto, da poco ripubblicato.

This photo features the album cover of "Dance with Death" by jazz pianist Andrew Hill. The cover has a dark, moody aesthetic with a shadowy image of Andrew Hill, wearing glasses, looking downward. The album title is written in lowercase letters: "andrew hill" in white and "dance with death" in red. Below the title, the names of the contributing musicians—Charles Tolliver, Joe Farrell, Victor Sproles, and Billy Higgins—are listed in small white text. The Blue Note Records logo and catalog number (73160) are also visible. The album is displayed on a wooden stand, set on a table. In the background, there are decorative items, including a pair of hand-painted drums, a small green frog figurine, and a green glass Christmas bottle. The setting appears to be a cozy, eclectic room with a rustic, artistic vibe.

Music Inc. – Live at Slugs’ (1970) is raw, spiritual post-bop at its finest. Tolliver, Cowell, McBee, and Hopps are 🔥. New 2025 2LP reissue remastered by Kevin Gray — both volumes, finally together.

Previously two separate Strata-East LPs, combined on a CD at some point, and now given a really respectful, deluxe treatment by Mack Avenue.

Music Inc – Impact (1972 / RE 1977)
Live at the Domicile, Munich. Killer Tolliver/Cowell set on Enja—thankfully not Strata-East or it’d cost 10x more. Japanese pressing, sounds fantastic. Fingers crossed the Strata reissue series brings some price sanity.

A lovely version of a favorite Antonio Carlos Jobim track here, off this 1968 album named for its version of the Laura Nyro song. Herbie Hancock on piano; Gary Bartz sax solo starts @3:53; both are feat. on all tracks of the #HerbieMann -prod. LP, along w/ #GradyTate, #CharlesTolliver, & #HubertLaws

Highly recommend this live #CharlesTolliver live on Reel to Real. Tolliver was co-founder of Strata East, played with Gary Bartz, Booker Ervin & Roy Ayer’s. Sadly didn’t do many albums as leader, but Paper Man & Impact are bangers.
