A landslide last week in Farwell Canyon, south of #WilliamsLake, dammed the #ChilcotinRiver and created a lake about 11 kilometres long behind the slide.
Water started flowing over the top of the landslide on Monday:

#ChilcotinLandslide flood has passed Fraser River at Big Bar gauge, peaking at 3640 m3/s. On L is an annotated hydrograph for past week. On R is the same but for the past 365 days. We were lucky that Fraser was at historically low levels!
The lake behind #ChilcotinLandslide has begun to flow over the dam. Let's hope for nothing too rapid as the dam is incised and breached.
LiDAR difference map of the #ChilcotinLandslide, flown by Brian Menounos and @hakaiinstitute.bsky.social system shows about 6x10^6 m3 of change. Will be very interesting to see how this is incised as the flood begins in the coming days.

Satellite image of a landslide on the Chilcotin River
I wish we could post videos on this platform. Alas. here is a high-res satellite image fo the #ChilcotinLandslide and the impounded lake, which grew to about 9km in length by yesterday morning (still growing!).
Hydrograph of Fraser River flow showing steep decline after a landslide blocked flow in the Chilcotin River, and then rebounding.
Fraser River at Big Bar Creek (08MD013) shows discharge rebounding after #ChilcotinRiver landslide. Possibly dam has burst, possibly something else (storm in the basin upstream? Diurnal variability?). Hopefully Brian Menounos & Marten Geertsema will know more after visit today. #ChilcotinLandslide
