#inktober day 16 - Blunder

Did you know that penguins tend not to fear humans. In fact, since the only creatures that walk on two legs in the arctic are penguins, they likely think that people are just large penguins!

Great shot! Looks like you were trying to get the ship and the #penguin photobombed you! Looks like a #GentooPenguin. Here's a #ChinstrapPenguin that looks like it's singing opera. #Antarctica @penguins--ofworld.bsky.social #birds

Amazing photo. Your timing was perfect. During a recent trip to #Antarctica I was fortunate enough to capture a #ChinstrapPenguin feeding its chick. Here is a short #video. #birds #feedingtime #photography. #Nature

Chinstrap penguins: fierce flippers, louder lungs.
These little Antarctic icons don’t back down—especially during chick-rearing season. Noisy? Yes. Adorable? Also yes.

A less than 2 foot penguin with brush tail, black back and wings with black feathers extending along the neck to a cap. A single chinstrap wraps around from about the ear to the chin with a black beak and dark orange/brown eyes just above. It is walking along a pebble beach and is carrying one pebble less than an inch in its beak headed uphill to the rookery where it probably has a pebble nest.

This whaler, probably from the tail end of the peak whaling era (it continued to mid 20th century) is set off against the Chinstrap Penguin headed back to the Southern Ocean. I like this because of the juxtaposition of the surviving species representative and the artifact from the previous, now dead, era. The composition is what appeals to me. See this in the deteriorating barns, and houses of times past. Half Moon Island is a frequent stopping point for Antarctic trips because it is easy to access and has a nice set of Chinstrap rookeries. It was our first stop in Antarctica and the first place I saw a wild penguin. The wider view gives more of the setting of course. I could not decide which one observers might like more.

🌍🌏🌎 Chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus)

Chinstrap penguins are easily recognized by the distinctive black band that extends from their eyes to under their chin. They have black backs and white bellies, along with pink legs and feet. These social birds gather in large colonies to breed and raise their young. They are known for their aggressive behavior, especially during territorial disputes, where they may engage in head-bobbing, wing-flapping, and even beak-biting. They are skilled swimmers and divers, using their flippers to propel themselves through the water in search of food.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Distribution: Circumpolar antarctic regions.

Class: Aves (Birds)
Order: Sphenisciformes (Penguins)
Family: Spheniscidae (Penguins)
Genus: Pygoscelis (Brush-tailed penguins)
Species: P. antarcticus (Chinstrap penguin)
