It *would* be a good video on #ChristmasGhostStories, if only The History Guy had cited the sources he used. To omit his sources in a video he had offered early for his paid Patreon supporters is especially !@#$%^. E.g. one of a number of instances from @valancourtbooks.bsky.social

A.M. Burridge - Smee In the second Christmas Ghost story we enjoy a game of 'Smee'. Twelve friends playing a hide-and-seek type game inside a huge, dark house, and then suddenly – there is this mysterious thirteenth player that hides with them! Alfred McLelland Burrage (1889–1956) was a British writer. He was noted in his time as an author of fiction for boys which he published under the pseudonym Frank Lelland, including a popular series called "Tufty". After his death, however, Burrage became best known for his ghost stories. 'Smee' takes place one Christmas and is about a game with more than an opportunity for another player. A hide and seek, where the hidden is often so for a reason.

Sir Walter Scott - The Tapestried Chamber Christmas Ghost stories kick off with the classic and underrated Sir Walter Scott - The Tapestried Chamber The Keepsake Stories is the title given to three short stories by Sir Walter Scott which appeared in The Keepsake for MDCCCXXIX, a literary annual published for Christmas 1828. The short stories were entitled "My Aunt Margaret's Mirror", "The Tapestried Chamber, or The Lady in the Sacque", and "Death of the Laird's Jock". Charles Heath had originally planned for Scott to become the editor of the annual. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, was a Scottish novelist, poet and historian. Many of his works remain classics of European and Scottish literature, notably the novels Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Waverley, Old Mortality, The Heart of Mid-Lothian, and The Bride of Lammermoor, along with the narrative poems Marmion and The Lady of the Lake. He greatly influenced European and American literature. As an advocate and legal administrator by profession, he combined writing and editing with his daily work as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire.

CHRISTMAS GHOSTS
—
INTERVIEW WITH SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE
The theory that there is any connection between the mid-winter season and manifestations of the Occult is not endorsed by authorities on spiritualism.
Discussing the question with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I found him ready to admit that the winter solstice might have something to do with folk-lore tales of magic and miracles connected in the popular mind with the Christmas season.
"The winter solstice and the dark change which comes over material nature may have something to do with such belief," he said, "but, on the other hand, there is no proof that it has. At least, I have never heard of it. On the contrary, I should have expected magic to be more in the air at midsummer—at the summer solstice. If there is any connection at all between seasonal changes and popular belief in magic, I should expect to find it in midsummer night dreams rather than in mid-winter. On the other hand, Walpurgis Night, the time of the witches' revels, according to German legend, occurs, I think, on the night between April 30 and May Day.
"The question, however, has nothing to do with spiritualism. It is a matter of comparative religion. It is certainly a survival of very much older cults than the Christian. The heralding angels are only a Christian version of beliefs which go back very much further. The mid-summer revels, I believe, date at any rate as far back as the worship of Baal. The subject, however, does not come
within my province as a spiritualist."
I asked Sir Arthur whether as a spiritualist he had more success at certain seasons. He replied: "Not at all. I don't find that psychic phenomena are affected by seasonal changes or that there is more difficulty in communicating at one time than another.

A sentence to chill the blood, 'A new Mark Gatiss ghost story for Christmas'. The entire canon of short stories at his disposal to make a successfully scary adaptation but he always manages to botch the job. For the love of Christ please let someone else try.
