Mary Stevenson Cassatt: American Impressionist in Paris Being the only American artist working w/ the iconic Impressionist ensemble undoubtedly felt like an achievement for Mary Stevenson Cassatt.

She gave the boys club a run for their money.

An impressionist landscape painting

The quote continues:

“Let me keep company always with those who say
"Look!" and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.”

It is becoming a habit to mindfully curate whose voices (actual voices, words, images, songs) I allow into my little world.

Somehow it feels extra critical right now to keep tabs on what gets in, then sniff out and banish what isn't helpful.
I like to think there is an ejector seat button right here at my fingertips - and I use it liberally. Mute? Yep. Block? No problem. Delete? Yes please. Invite? Carefully. Accept? With caution. The rain barrel of my psyche is close to full with all the things it can handle with grace. And I know all too well what happens when that barrel overflows - it ain't pretty.

I've noticed many of us asking "how do I?" with respect to the world situation (and how that situation trickles or pours or floods into our towns and neighborhoods). Perhaps it is different for each of us, what works and what does not. Here is one article I found helpful: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260312-nine-tips-to-help-you-cope-during-turbulent-times .

I'd love to know what is working (and what isn't) in your world - maybe our combined compassion and kindness can come up with a plan?

Just as we would have sworn Renoir’s view of the Forest at Fontainbleu looked more like a photo than a painting, here American artist Abbott Handerson Thayer has gone to the other extreme, evoking the forest so beautifully in an utterly loose Impressionist style, years before Impressionism itself became such a strong movement. This looks so like a watercolour to us, it’s hard to believe it’s actually oil paints - on cardboard, no less! Thayer has painted the forest in a gorgeous wash of green, with darker green splotches to slightly define some of the leaves and relatively simple long strokes of black, grey and brown to evoke slender tree trunks. You couldn’t get further from Renoir’s photographic realism than this. And yet it take you into that forest just as beautifully, in such a different, dreamlike way. The greens are soft and fill the space on both sides of a narrow path through the woods that runs down the centre. Thayer has painted a figure on the path, fairly close to the viewer, who appears to have stopped to look up into the trees on the right. The figure is softly done, but appears to be holding a walking stick. Far ahead, up in the distance, another figure is no more than a dark line on the (by then) pale beige, earthen path. Everything here is a gorgeous blur of colour, almost the definition of Impressionism. Yet it draws you into this woodland beauty just as much as Renoir’s realistic painting. We posted a link about the many artists who flocked to this forest for inspiration, painting outdoors, during that same era. What’s so surprising is that Thayer later turned to Realism - and just as beautifully, too, for his many realistic portraits of people are exquisite. Extraordinary how a place can inspire artists is so many ways, with such different results. But more extraordinary that while Renoir turned to Impressionism, Thayer went in the near opposite direction. One cannot deny there is incredible skill & beauty in both…We love this. ~tamisar💞
