It’s was the LAST DAY of #ClassicsTober23 on Tues, and I just want to say a massive thank you on behalf of me and @corabeth.bsky.social to everyone who has taken part over here on new BlueSky, in our third year of running the prompts!
For my very last #ClassicsTober23 post, here are some thoughts on my month of finding myth in Pompeii. 🏛️🏺

#ClassicsTober23 31: Hecate
“ibat ad antiquas Hecates Perseidos aras,
quas nemus umbrosum secretaque silva tegebat”
She went to the ancient altars of Hecate, the daughter of Perses, which the shady wood and the hidden forest concealed.
(Ovid, Metamorphoses 7.74-5)

The Triple Hecate, 1795
by William Blake.
Hecate may have shared a temple in suburbs of #Pompeii (w/Artemis, Zeus Melichor, Ceres), where these statues were found. But her image also appeared in temple/shrine painting such as this one from the villa of P. Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale. #ClassicsTober23 day 31 🏺🏛️

Día 31. Hécate. Ἑκάτη
Black and white drawing of a woman with three heads carrying a torch, in a border of snakes, smoke and branches.
Hecate, for the final post of #ClassicsTober23! 🎉
#ClassicsTober23 Hecate: we tend to think of her as the Goddess of Witchcraft, but she was also the goddess of transition, hence her often being portrayed in a triform looking in multiple directions. This was dedicated by Aelius Barbarus, a freedman to Emperors

#ClassicsTober23 30: Tiresias
“placuit quae sit sententia docti
quaerere Tiresiae: Venus huic erat utraque nota”
It was agreed to ask the wise Tiresias of his opinion: both aspects of Love were known to him.

Día 30. Tirésias.Τειρεσίας

Tiresias was turned into a woman for 7 years & was oracle of Apollo. The Vesuvian region has it's own (already female, no Hera assistance necessary) the Sibyl of Cuma. Last time I was there heard weird noises in the cave...can attest pigeons less good as oracles. #ClassicsTober23 day 30 🏛️🏺

#ClassicsTober23 Tiresias: here we see the blind Theban prophet as he appears in the Odysessy. This is by Henry Fuseli. Like many of his paintings, it’s suffused with gothic sensibility - darkly disturbing, macabre & eerie. A perfect style for this scene

#ClassicsTober23 29: Nemesis
“”sic amet ipse licet, sic non potiatur amato!”
dixerat: adsensit precibus Rhamnusia iustis”
“So may he love himself, so may he not obtain the beloved!”
He had said: Nemesis approved his righteous prayer

#ClassicsTober23 Day 29: Nemesis
Albrecht Dürer's engraving of Nemesis, c 1502.
#Pompeii has a depiction of the version of the myth where Nemesis is the mother of Helen. Here she is performing a sacrifice to Venus, and you can see that pesky swan (Zeus) pulling at her clothes. I.4.25 stereoview Sommer & Behles c.1860-1870. #ClassicsTober23 day29 🏺🏛️
