This is "South Mill, Clavering" by Harold Steggles. It is undated but I strongly suspect that it dates from the early to mid 1940s because Harold's parents took over the licence for the Fox & Hounds pub in the village c.1940/41 after their house in Romford was bombed. #HaroldSteggles #Clavering

It’s near impossible to get a photograph of the castle which does it justice, owing to extensive coverage of mature trees, however the adjacent #Clavering church caught my attention. The structure dates from late C14th & early C15th, but’s understood to have been built on site of an earlier church.

Passing #Clavering #Castle where the @castlestudies.bsky.social are completing an excavation, I made a flying visit.
The castle earthworks are believed to date from C12th, but a reference in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle for 1052, is suggestive of a pre Norman Conquest defensive structure on the site.
