Here's another one that I haven't shown for a very long time! This is "Stoke by Nayland" by Harold Steggles from 1933. It seems to me to be a bit of an "outlier" where Harold's work is concerned but it is lovely, nonetheless. #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

On a bright, sunny morning, I thought I'd try & find an ELG image to match! This is "Walberswick" by Harold Steggles from 1934. Some long time ago someone online queried the apparent "sand dunes" as being "artistic licence": Walter Steggles' archive photo proves they were there!! #HaroldSteggles

This is "Smithfield Spires" by Harold Steggles from 1931. Harold lived at Chadwell Heath when he painted it & every day he would walk from either Liverpool or Fenchurch Street Stations to his workplace at Grey's Inn & cross Holborn Viaduct, which is where he took his view. #HaroldSteggles

This is "Coborn Street, Bow" by Harold Steggles from 1931. The view was taken from the school yard where some of the evening art classes were held, behind the black gates that one can see in the Street View image. Harold would still recognise the view as one can see in my photo. #HaroldSteggles

Here's another one that hasn't seen the light of day recently. This is "Essex Farmhouse" by Harold Steggles from 1933. Interestingly, it was incorrectly catalogued in the exhibition at Lefevre in that year as "Sussex Farmhouse": presumably, just a simple typo. #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Today would have been Harold Steggles' 115th birthday as he was born on 8th February 1911. Very sadly, he died, tragically young, of leukaemia, aged just 60 on 13th October 1971. I have attached a few examples of his work along with a lovely photo of him. #HaroldSteggles #botd #EastLondonGroup

This is "High Wycombe" by Harold Steggles from 1938. It was exhibited at Lefevre in 1938 & 1939 & again at the Ashmolean in 1939, where it was sold to Sir Robert Ensor. It is fascinating to see Harold's archive photo & his "alteration" of the view #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup #HighWycombe

This is "St Mark's Church" by Harold Steggles from 1934. It is a superb example of Harold's meticulous attention to architectural detail but, interestingly, he has omitted to include the hands on the clock: possibly a deliberate choice: who knows? #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Here's a lovely watercolour that was a preparatory piece for an oil: I haven't shown it for ages, for some reason! This is "Battlesbridge Mill" by Harold Steggles from 1936. The black & white image was of the oil (with some interesting changes!) #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup #Battlesbridge #Essex

Continuing my theme of posting iconic pieces of ELG work during the holiday period, here's "The Red Hut" by Harold Steggles from 1931. I can't be absolutely certain but I believe that this one was painted in the park at Warley. #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Continuing my theme of showing iconic ELG images during the holiday period, here's "Warner Street" by Harold Steggles from 1935. It was once owned by Sir David Scott who was an avid collector of ELG work with at least 16 pieces in his collection!! #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

On a rather dull & drab late November morning I thought that a bit of sunshine & warmth might be appropriate! This is "St Tropez" by Harold Steggles from 1939 along with his pencil sketch of the view & original archive photograph. Harold & Walter Steggles drove there in 1939!! #HaroldSteggles

This is a great favourite of mine, "Smithfield Spires" by Harold Steggles from 1931 His view must have been taken Holborn Viaduct & I particularly like the way that he's incorporated his signature in to the signage on the building! #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

As someone who was born in Dorset, this is a great favourite of mine as well as being an iconic view that is instantly recognisable. This is "Chesil Bank from Portland" by Harold Steggles from his joint show with his brother Walter at Alex. Reid & Lefevre in 1938 #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup

Good evening, Steve @squaremileguide.bsky.social & how interesting, thank you. St Mark's seems to have inspired two or three members of the Group (Elwin painted it at least twice as did Harold Steggles). This version of "St Mark's Church" is by Harold Steggles from 1934. #HaroldSteggles

In c.1933/34 Walter & Harold Steggles pooled their joint incomes from selling paintings & bought a Model 8 Ford car &, from that point on, their artistic horizons expanded dramatically! Here's "Alnwick" by Harold Steggles from 1936 along with a photo of him (& the car!) sketching. #HaroldSteggles

This is "Essex Landscape" by Harold Steggles from 1933 along with his original archive photo of his view. As the son of a Dorset farmer, this is a scene that is very familiar to me, albeit from a different county. I'd love to know where this farmyard was. #HaroldSteggles #Essex #EastLondonGroup

This is "Heybridge Basin" by Harold Steggles which is undated but I believe that it might date from either 1932 or 1933, judging by Harold's style & palette. #HaroldSteggles #Heybridge #Essex #EastLondonGroup

This is "The Red Hut" by Harold Steggles from 1931. I believe that it was painted near Warley in Essex & it was one of two paintings with the same title & the attached press cutting from 1930 shows that example. Sadly, I have no idea whether or not that one still survives. #HaroldSteggles

This is "South Mill, Clavering" by Harold Steggles. It is undated but I strongly suspect that it dates from the early to mid 1940s because Harold's parents took over the licence for the Fox & Hounds pub in the village c.1940/41 after their house in Romford was bombed. #HaroldSteggles #Clavering

Continuing yesterday's theme, here's "Cookham" by Harold Steggles which is undated but I believe that it would have been most likely painted in the mid 1960s whilst Harold was visiting his older brother Walter who lived in the village from the mid-1950s until 1969 #HaroldSteggles #EastLondonGroup
